Timofey Berezin, Paddy Considine works at a former top-secret, badly run and aging nuclear reprocessing facility in Skotoprigonyevsk-16, a former closed city and a naukograd. At the film’s outset, he is exposed to radioactive contamination while selflessly trying to prevent a critical malfunction. The facility’s managers tell him that his exposure was a survivable 100 rems, while accusing him of sabotage and suspending him without pay. Loyal coworkers, however, help Timofey discover the truth that he was exposed to 1,000 rems of radiation. Suffering from acute radiation poisoning, he has only days to live.

Before his adoring wife, Marina, Radha Mitchell is fully aware of his fate, he leaves for Moscow, on a mission to secure a better future for her and their young son. He hooks up with a small-time gangster, Shiv, Oscar Isaac, in hopes of finding a buyer for a self-made canister of a little over 100 grams of weapons-grade plutonium salt he has stolen. It is 1995, only a few years after the dissolution of the Soviet Union, and they spend their time frequenting the hotels, nightclubs and private palaces of the new Moscow underworld, ricocheting between two rival crime lords, Nikolaj Lie Kaas and Steven Berkoff. However, what Timofey and Shiv never realize is that they are both caught in the same dilemma: trying to find a way free of a certain fate; hoping to do right by their loved ones before it is too late.

In the waning years of the Soviet Union, the stark industrial landscape of a remote nuclear reprocessing facility becomes the unlikely backdrop for a desperate race against time. The film opens with the hum of aging machinery and the cold, institutional indifference that permeates the closed‑city environment, painting a portrait of a world where the remnants of a once‑great scientific ambition now grind under bureaucratic neglect. The tone is gritty and somber, a chiaroscuro of Soviet decay and the flickering hopes of ordinary people trying to survive in its shadows.

Timofey Berezin is a modest, diligent worker whose life is upended when a routine act of bravery leaves him gravely ill. As he grapples with the brutal reality of a limited lifespan, his love for his family becomes both his anchor and his driving force. He is joined by his devoted wife, Marina, whose quiet strength offers a glimpse of the tender domestic life he is striving to protect. Their relationship grounds the narrative, underscoring the intimate stakes that push an otherwise ordinary man into extraordinary circumstances.

Seeking a last, risky chance to secure a future for his son, Timofey crosses paths with a hapless yet well‑meaning crook, Shiv, a figure who navigates Moscow’s emerging black‑market underworld with a mix of swagger and uncertainty. The capital itself is rendered as a chaotic tapestry of nightclubs, opulent hotels, and shadowed corridors where new crime lords vie for power in the post‑Communist vacuum. Together, the unlikely duo embodies a clash of desperation and ambition, their uneasy partnership hinting at the moral compromises forced upon those caught in the relentless grind of survival. The film’s atmosphere remains tense and hopeful, inviting viewers into a world where each choice reverberates against the fragile promise of a better tomorrow.
