Kumar, a dedicated mortuary van driver, finds himself embroiled in a tense and emotionally charged journey that tests his resilience and morals. Tasked with transporting the body of Narayana Perumal, an elderly man who tragically died in an accident, Kumar sets out from Chennai towards Tirunelveli. Alongside his personal struggles — including leaving behind his pregnant wife, Kalaiyazhagi “Kalai”, who is nearing her delivery, and his grandfather — Kumar faces a series of unforeseen challenges that complicate his mission.

During the trip, Kumar encounters Nalinamoorthy, a down-and-out Koothu artist, who requests a ride to Vannarapettai. Their journey takes a dramatic turn when they witness a roadside accident, prompting Nalinamoorthy to criticize Kumar for not stopping to help the victims. Kumar, annoyed by Nalinamoorthy’s loquacious nature, initially finds him irritating, especially as the vehicle repeatedly breaks down. Despite this, Kumar relies on Nalinamoorthy to push start the van each time it stalls, highlighting a strange camaraderie born out of necessity.

As they continue, they pick up a young couple needing a ride to Madurai. The situation intensifies when Kumar receives a distressing phone call informing him that Kalai, his wife, is experiencing complications with her delivery, and she needs an urgent cesarean section which costs Rs. 25,000. Meanwhile, the young couple’s situation becomes more perilous when they are attacked by goons after their phone call about the attack on the boy’s father. Kumar, driven by a sense of duty and compassion, fights off the assailants to ensure they return safely to their village, risking even more of his own safety.

Rest moments are short-lived, as Kumar’s van is broken into during a break, and Narayana Perumal’s body is reported stolen. Blaming Nalinamoorthy for the theft, Kumar’s frustration boils over, leading to a heated confrontation. However, Nalinamoorthy soon returns, offering his support, and together they push forward towards Tirunelveli.

The plot thickens as Kumar receives instructions from Shanmugam to retrieve a body from the Madurai mortuary — not the original, but a deformed one — to replace Narayana Perumal. Meanwhile, the rival faction led by Esakkimuthu and Sankarapandian—played by Vimal and others—are intent on performing the last rites themselves, driven by a desire to claim inheritance rights. They orchestrate a scheme involving stolen bodies, secret last rites performed on the outskirts of the city, and manipulations that highlight the intense rivalry and greed underlying their actions.

Kumar resorts to deception by dressing Nalinamoorthy as the deceased and sending a photo to Esakki, creating a false trail. Meanwhile, the village community unknowingly pays their respects to Nalinamoorthy’s body, believing it to be Narayana Perumal’s. Kumar’s grief intensifies as he dances uncontrollably at the funeral, overwhelmed by the loss and the weight of his actions. The rival brothers’ obsession culminates in tense confrontations, with police and village elders attempting to ensure the last rites are completed before time runs out.

Throughout all this chaos, Kumar’s personal life comes under emotional strain. Kalai calls him, begging him to return and pay for her operation, which pushes him further into despair. He lashes out at her for borrowing money to help others, feeling responsible for his own financial and emotional troubles. As he reflects on his tragic past—losing his parents at a young age, the deaths of his infants, and his uncertain future—his internal pain becomes palpable.

In a tragic and unexpected turn, Nalinamoorthy, overwhelmed by his existential struggles, leaps out of the van and is fatally hit by a street post. Kumar, devastated, dresses Nalinamoorthy’s body to impersonate Narayana Perumal’s, hoping to save his situation. The village and the rival faction are unaware of the switch, and they mourn Nalinamoorthy as if he were the deceased elder.

In the midst of grief and chaos, Kumar is driven by despair and guilt but manages to keep his composure, even as suspicious doubts about the authenticity of the body linger. The story concludes with Kumar having paid a heavy price, both emotionally and morally, for navigating a journey marked by deception, rivalry, and tragedy—an odyssey that underscores the complexities of loss, duty, and human frailty.
