What Is Parasite About?
The premise of Parasite in 342 words, with nothing given away. The full story follows below.
In a cracked near‑future where an atomic calamity has turned the world into a bleak patchwork of desperation, the remnants of society are overseen by a shadowy collective known only as the Merchants. Their grip is felt in every ruined town and dust‑baked road, turning ordinary survival into a constant negotiation with unseen power. The atmosphere is a relentless blend of stark desolation and uneasy quiet, punctuated by the low hum of hidden machinery that hints at a technology once meant to rebuild but now twisted into control.
Paul Dean is a brilliant but conflicted scientist who was coerced into engineering a new form of life—a parasite designed to feed on its host. When the true horror of his creation becomes apparent, it latches onto his own body, turning his very being into a ticking time‑bomb of dread. Forced to flee the Merchant’s reach, he becomes a lone wanderer, traveling from one desolate outpost to another, driven by a desperate need to understand and ultimately destroy the organism that now lives inside him. The film’s tone follows his frantic, pulse‑quickening quest, blending visceral body‑horror with a tense, cat‑and‑mouse chase.
Patricia Welles appears as a resourceful young lemon grower, offering a glimmer of humanity amid the ruin. Their partnership forms the emotional core of the story—a fragile alliance built on mutual necessity, shared curiosity, and a tentative hope that together they might outwit the forces hunting them. Along the way, they must stay one step ahead of a hostile gang led by Ricus and his red‑neck henchmen, as well as the relentless operative known simply as the Merchant, whose presence adds a cold, bureaucratic menace to the chase.
The movie steadies itself between stark, sun‑bleached landscapes and claustrophobic interiors, constantly reminding the audience of the fragile line between survival and annihilation. Every encounter is filtered through a lens of suspicion and urgency, leaving viewers perched on the edge of each breath as the characters navigate a world where trust is scarce and the unknown parasite lurks just beneath the surface of every interaction.
