Dr. Michael Parker [Rock Hudson] departs California to speak at a conference in New York, a trip that tests the delicate balance he maintains with his young daughter, Suzy Parker [Shelley Fabares]. Suzy stays behind with Miss Tucker [Helen Wallace], her devoted governess, while Mike navigates the city and the event, clinging to the hope that distance won’t erode their bond.

One night after the conference, a caricature artist named Victor [George Sanders] arrives at Mike’s table, accompanied by a nightclub pianist, Dorian Kent.
