Sixteen is a thoughtful exploration of lost innocence and teenage heartache set against the backdrop of a rapidly modernizing urban India, where the Internet, gossip pages, and a clutter of TV channels shape how young people see themselves and each other. In this world, Nidhi [Mehak Manwani] is an innocent virgin who is usually teased for her purity, and she is dating Kartik [Rohan Mehra], though she wants to wait for the “right time and the right place.” Anu [Izabelle Leite] moves through life with a carefree confidence, dreaming of modeling and testing boundaries, while Tanisha [Wamiqa Gabbi] is more mature for her age, living with her aunt after the death of her parents. Ashwin [Highphill Mathew] comes from a middle-class family, where a strict father expects him to pursue a conventional path, possibly as an IAS officer.

The film follows their intertwined lives as a handsome and intelligent writer, Vikram Kapoor, moves in as a tenant at Tanisha’s place and begins to develop feelings for her, influenced by events in his past. On a different emotional front, Ashwin confesses his feelings to Tanisha and is gently rejected; the rejection devastates him, and he is pushed toward desperation. The very same day, a disturbing turn of events at home unfolds—Ashwin’s father stumbles upon porn on his computer and disciplines him harshly, leaving Ashwin to retaliate in a moment of anger that ends with his father’s death. Ashwin’s mother tries to shield him by taking the blame, but the consequences force him to flee his home. He soon encounters a gang of young criminals who recruit him into their fold, pulling him deeper into a life far from the expectations placed on him by his father.

Complications multiply as Tanisha’s aunt reveals an unspoken attraction to Vikram, creating tension and blurred loyalties. Anu learns that her parents are in an open marriage, a discovery that shakes her sense of security, while Nidhi’s world tilts when she suspects she might be pregnant. The possibility becomes real when she discovers she is carrying Kartik’s baby, and the couple makes a painful decision to consider abortion. The situation forces Nidhi into a hospital, where she must stay for two days, and she chooses to hide this from her mother.

Meanwhile, Anu encounters a harsher reality when her ex-boyfriend leaks an MMS depicting her in a compromising position, leading to her expulsion from school. Tanisha learns that Vikram is soon leaving for London, heightening a sense of urgency among her circle. A rival to Nidhi, Anu, and Tanisha reveals the true reason behind Nidhi’s hospital visit to her mother, prompting her worried parents to rush to the hospital’s side.

Ashwin’s gang targets an old man’s house in a planned robbery, and Ashwin is confronted with the moral weight of violence when the old man points out that his son is an IAS officer; overwhelmed, Ashwin breaks down and weeps. Anu’s crisis deepens as she contemplates suicide, but a phone call from her brother arriving the following weekend stops her. In a moment born of longing and fear, Tanisha, saddened by Vikram’s imminent departure, goes to sleep in his room, seeking closeness before parting ways.

A year passes, and the lives of the three girls have shifted in new directions. Nidhi enrolls in an all-girls school, while Anu pursues the Miss India contest with the support of her loving parents. Vikram writes a novel titled Sixteen, which earns a nomination in the Booker Prize finals, signaling a shift from the pain of youth to a broader literary horizon. The trio—Anu, Tanisha, and Nidhi—decide to visit Ashwin in the juvenile correction home where he is kept, a moment that marks a fragile sense of reconciliation. In a final, quiet gesture, Tanisha kisses Ashwin on the cheek, hinting at a growing feeling between them and suggesting that the story of their lives is far from over.
