Yūta Togashi is a boy who, during junior high school, suffered from chūnibyō, believing that he possessed supernatural powers and calling himself the Dark Flame Master, which alienated him from his classmates. Seeking a fresh start, he aims to begin high school without any ties to his old delusions.
This proves difficult, however, as a delusional girl in his class, Rikka Takanashi, learns of Yūta’s past and becomes interested in him. As the plot progresses, Rikka becomes more attached to Yūta, who, despite finding her delusions irritating and embarrassing, accepts her.
He helps Rikka with a number of things, including founding and maintaining her club, the Far-East Magical Napping Society – Summer Thereof, which also includes Sanae Dekomori (current chūnibyō), Shinka Nibutani (former chūnibyō), and Kumin Tsuyuri (the perpetually sleeping member). When Yūta joins Rikka on her summer vacation, he learns that two years earlier Rikka’s father, to whom she was very close, died unexpectedly due to a terminal illness, causing her to fall into her delusions.
After Yūta agrees to help Rikka search for the Ethereal Horizon (不可視境界線, Fukashi Kyōkaisen), which she believes will lead her to her father, she becomes romantically interested in Yūta and vice versa.

In the bustling corridors of a Japanese high school, the final year feels less like a conclusion and more like a delicate balancing act between lingering adolescent fantasies and the looming reality of adulthood. The campus hums with the familiar mix of youthful optimism and quiet anxiety, a backdrop where ordinary school life brushes against the lingering echo of past eccentricities. This world, tinged with a whimsical nostalgia for imagined powers and hidden realms, sets the stage for a story that blends heartfelt sentiment with a light‑hearted, almost mischievous tone.
Yuuta walks these halls carrying the faint scent of his former chūnibyō persona, a self‑proclaimed Dark Flame Master who once hid behind elaborate delusions. Across from him, Rikka radiates a vibrant, feverish imagination, still clinging to the magical narratives that helped her cope with loss. Their friendship, forged through shared secrets and the quirky rituals of the Far‑East Magical Napping Society – Summer Thereof, is a patchwork of affection, irritation, and genuine care. The club’s colorful members—Sanae, the current self‑declared sorceress, Shinka, a former dreamer now navigating reality, and Kumin, whose perpetual sleep adds a soothing rhythm—provide a backdrop of playful camaraderie that underscores the film’s affectionate humor.
The delicate equilibrium is tested when Touka, Rikka’s older sister, receives an opportunity to work in Italy and urges her to join, fearing the challenges of Japan’s university entrance exams. The prospect of separation sparks a wildly inventive solution from their circle of friends: the idea that Yuuta and Rikka might elope, turning their impending goodbye into a spontaneous, cross‑country escapade. This suggestion launches a chaotic, comedic adventure that promises unexpected hurdles, quirky encounters, and a series of heartfelt moments as the pair—and their loyal companions—navigate the varied landscapes of Japan together.
The film balances tender introspection with a breezy, almost episodic humor, inviting viewers to linger on the bittersweet edge of growing up while cheering on an improbable, runaway romance. It captures the spirit of youthful defiance against the tide of expectation, offering a colorful tapestry of emotions that linger long after the final scene.
