Locusts: The 8th Plague 2005

In a genetics lab about 15 miles outside Prairie, Idaho, scientists Gary Wolf [David Keith] and Russ Snow [Jeff Fahey] push the boundaries of bioengineering by creating a completely new species of locust engineered to target crops that pests otherwise devastate. In a controlled test inside the crop dome, Russ releases the insects into a nearby field, using a strong pheromone lure to coax them back to the main holding pen. The plan begins to unravel when a vital vent jams, leaving the system partially open. A Silogen worker crawls into the tunnel to fix it, only to be overwhelmed and killed as the swarm breaches the facility’s defenses. The locusts escape into the world beyond the lab, setting off a chain of deadly encounters that ripple out to the farms near Prairie.

On a nearby farm, Colt Dunton [Dan Cortese] pursues a new kind of organic pesticide, sharing his work with friends Hank and Agatha [Paraskeva Djukelova]. When Colt leaves to monitor a test, Hank heads into the corn with his husker blade and discovers the carcass of a bull that has been eaten down to its bones. Agatha, grieving the loss of her son Mike, senses danger in the fields and soon becomes the next victim as locusts creep into the farm. Colt rushes to the hospital where his girlfriend, Vicky [Julie Benz], works as a veterinarian, hoping for news about the animals. The initial scene of farmyard tragedy becomes personal for Colt as he and Vicky begin to see a broader pattern: cattle, cows, and other livestock across Prairie start dying in the same unsettling way, their internals gnawed clean by the swarm. A surviving boy from a family picnic is brought to the hospital, and a state trooper arrives with him to help coordinate the response. The evidence mounts when Colt examines a dead locust from a farm vehicle and confirms it is a juvenile, demonstrating that the insects are breeding and evolving.

As the investigation expands, Colt, Vicky, USDA Agent Greg Ballard [Kirk B.R. Woller], and a team of exterminators track the nest and attempt to wipe out the larvae and the adults. The swarm is relentless, and the attempts to spray chemicals escalate the violence, drawing the locusts into a frenzy that leaves the exterminators scrambling for cover. The leadership at the USDA, led by Greg, orders UD-66, a potent chemical weapon, to be deployed. But Vicky cautions that the spray could devastate crops for years to come, while Colt warns that the long-term ecological costs might be greater than the immediate threat. The moral tension intensifies as the battlefield shifts from fields to a public space when the locusts storm an amusement park along the highway, devouring anything in reach and turning a family outing into a harrowing nightmare.

Back at the laboratory, Colt studies the locust larvae and tests live adults, uncovering a troubling paradox: traditional chemical pesticides attract the swarm rather than repel it. This insight fractures the plan to blanket Prairie with UD-66, and a field test in a livestock roundup goes disastrously wrong when the helicopter delivering the pesticide is attacked by the swarm. In a desperate bid to stop the invasion, Colt uses the organic pesticide he developed, releasing it from a plane over Prairie. The swarm collapses in an instant, giving the weary townsfolk a momentary sense of relief—until two larger swarms appear on the horizon.

With the city under siege once more, Russ Snow steps into a pivotal, sacrificial role. He lures the locusts toward a crop dome using the pheromone lure, a move that buys Colt and Vicky time to implement a last-ditch plan. The dome is programmed to self-destruct, and the explosion obliterates the nest and nearly all of the insects inside. The immediate danger is quelled, but the end is not quite here—the film ends with a chilling hint: a truck carrying hundreds of hungry locusts labeled Live Specimens heads toward another crop dome, suggesting that the threat may not be over, but rather merely relocated.

Throughout this high-stakes cascade of scientific ambition and ecological peril, the human cost remains at the center. The bond between Colt and Vicky underpins every decision, even as the couple confronts impossible choices about how to protect the land, the animals, and the people who depend on them. The catastrophe demonstrates how quickly nature can turn engineered precision into uncontrollable chaos, and it tests the resilience and resourcefulness of a community forced to confront a nightmare born from a laboratory and released into the wild.
