An alien spacecraft crashes in a U.S. national park, and a mosquito bites its dead pilot, mutating into a huge, bloodthirsty insect. Megan and Ray encounter the mutated mosquito

While driving toward a summer camp inside the park, Megan and Ray accidentally hit the mutated mosquito. They later discover a severed proboscis lodged in the car's radiator, a grotesque sign of the creature's reach. The encounter marks the first direct human confrontation with the mutation.

Hendricks ordered to spray repellent

Hendricks, a park ranger, is ordered by the park chief to spray a gaseous mosquito repellent. This response shows the park's attempt to counter the threat with limited tools. The plan's effectiveness remains uncertain as the danger grows.

Bank robbers arrive; Rex encounters giant mosquito

Three bank robbers—Earl, Junior, and Rex—enter the park and encounter a giant mosquito. Rex runs to an outhouse, where the insect attacks him, and Junior accidentally shoots him. Earl kills the mosquito with a shotgun, illustrating the insect's lethality.

Rangers attacked while fishing

Two park rangers fishing are attacked by mosquitoes. One ranger has his eye gouged out, and the other, after swimming back to shore, is killed when a mosquito stabs him.

Tent attack during a couple's night

A couple in a tent are attacked after the man steps outside to urinate. A mosquito slips into the tent and impales the woman; the man is also attacked. The scene demonstrates how the threat penetrates even seemingly safe spaces.

Ray meets Parks and the meteorite hunt begins

The next morning, Ray teams up with meteorologist Parks who is investigating a meteorite said to have landed in the park. Parks' radiation monitor begins detecting radioactivity, guiding them toward a boat containing the dead ranger. They drive to the park to notify the police and discover that the park's visitors and staff are dead.

Discovery of the mosquito and park collapse

They find the carcass of a mosquito and Megan identifies it as Aedes aegypti. Hendricks informs the group that the park's electrical and communications systems have been destroyed. The team realizes the danger extends beyond the insect and into the park's infrastructure.

Escape in RV; plan to seek help

Deciding to head for civilization, the survivors steal an RV and attempt to flee the expanding swarm. Earl and Junior attempt to hijack the vehicle but are captured and bound. The group hopes to outrun the mosquitoes, but the future remains perilous.

Swarm attacks RV; crash

The mosquitoes swarm the RV, forcing Megan to hesitate at a door while the others scramble for safety. Hendricks saves Megan from falling; Earl breaks free and menaces her as the swarm intensifies. Megan stabs Earl with a severed proboscis, and the swarm crashes the RV, sending them careening off course.

Escape through the pipes; Junior's death

The group crawls through a pipe network to escape the buzzing horde. Inside the pipes, Junior is impaled by a mosquito, his eyes bulging and exploding in a grisly display. The remaining survivors press on, desperate to find a safe escape.

After sunset, Parks reveals he fought in the Vietnam War, and Hendricks reveals that he did as well. The men brace for another assault as mosquitoes begin infiltrating the farmhouse. They prepare to defend themselves using whatever tools they can find.

Defensive measures and discovery of eggs

In the basement, Parks and Hendricks discover a colossal nest of mosquito eggs. The group rigs the house to explode, using a broken gas line and open windows to accelerate the blast. Ray and Megan set fires and hold off the swarm as best they can.
