Land of Hope 2018

Veikko, Konsta Laakso, is the lone survivor of a brutal Continuation War ambush. Seriously wounded, he is sent to a convalescence facility where wounded soldiers and their horses are tended side by side. At the same time, Anni, Oona Airola, the daughter of a wealthy bakery owner, mourns the death of her beloved brother Aarne and makes a painful journey to the same convalescent farm in search of Liinu, the horse she loves. Liinu, scarred by years of service, is traumatized by the memories of battle and does not recognise her, leaving Anni heartbroken as she confronts the distance that war has carved between them.

Back at the farm, Veikko begins to recover among other veterans, and a troubling government scheme is floated: veterans who are wounded and granted land must marry to qualify. This prospect shades the conversations of the men as they wade through the uncertain hopes of a life after the front. Meanwhile, at home, Anni confronts her father, Kalevi, who has just dismissed a pregnant war widow from the family bakery and resists letting Anni take an active role in managing the business that once belonged to Aarne. The tension between duty and longing threads through every decision, shaping Anni’s resolve to choose her own path even as Kalevi’s stance widens the strain within the family.

When Anni returns to the convalescent farm, she finally finds Veikko in the stables, where he is tending to Liinu, the horse that served with his unit. Anni explains that her mother cannot accept Aarne’s death, and Veikko confirms that he witnessed it, sharing a quiet, intimate moment of understanding with her before he leaves. The two exchange a meaningful kiss that signals the beginning of something more than friendship, a spark that grows when Anni visits him again during the night.

During a Christmas dinner, Kalevi singles out Putte, a business associate’s son who avoided frontline service, as a potential match for Anni. His tactless remarks unsettle Ella, who runs the bakery and becomes protective of her sister’s future. In a moment of misdirection, Anni private invites Veikko, and a mistaken encounter with a passing soldier nearly triggers a painful reminder of loss. The man is Veikko, returning with Liinu to the farm, and the moment culminates in a warmer exchange between Anni and Veikko in the stable, where she thanks him for bringing Liinu home and they share a kiss; that night, Anni visits Veikko in his room, deepening their bond.

Ella, wary of a life tethered to a battlefield, cautions Anni that love alone cannot sustain a marriage. Yet Anni defends Veikko, insisting that Aarne’s death was not in vain and that his memory should not silence her heart. Hilkka, Anni’s sister, senses that Anni’s feelings for Veikko surpass concern for propriety. As the romance grows, Veikko makes his case in front of the bakery crowd, explaining his plan to secure a government homestead, while Kalevi repeats his view that such a prize would be only a consolation prize and urges Anni to protect her future from a potential upheaval. Anni refuses to be swayed, choosing Veikko and leaving with him and Liinu for North Karelia, even as Kalevi vows to close her bank account to force a reconsideration.

The couple’s civil wedding is a quiet, intimate affair, witnessed by Hilkka, and Veikko presents Anni with Aarne’s old camera as a wedding gift. They travel to the land allotted to them, a remote forest plot donated by the widow Maire Luukkonen, and embark on the demanding work of building a home from the ground up. Their neighbor Vertti, initially wary and even threatening, gradually becomes a source of practical help, and the broader local community joins in to help clear stumps and raise a hut. The months of winter bring both hardship and hope: Veikko’s health fluctuates, and he collapses into a frozen stream, from which Anni rescues him and then accompanies him to the hospital. She subsists on sparse meals, supported by neighbors and occasional gifts from Maire, though the generosity of the community is tempered by memory and longing. While ice fishing, Anni meets Maire’s son Aatos, who brings her a fish and a reminder of kinship, and Hilkka visits to share the burden.

Veikko’s return from surgery signals a renewed push to rebuild, and the couple resumes their labor on the land. Yet life on the frontier remains precarious. A village celebration becomes a crucible for old resentments when Aatos confronts Veikko about reclaiming the land and drunkenly oversteps boundaries by groping Anni at a folk dance. The heated confrontation triggers a new series of events: a fiery accident that destroys their home when a lantern is knocked over during a drunken sauna gathering, forcing Anni to leave without warning and seek refuge with her family. Kalevi negotiates only a cautious path to reconciliation, while Ella encourages a pragmatic alliance between Anni and Hilkka to take over the bakery and land responsibilities together. When surveyors threaten to revoke Veikko’s land due to rumors of divorce, Vertti defends him and admonishes the townspeople for disrespecting a war veteran.

As the days grow longer, Ella sees the depth of Anni and Veikko’s commitment and urges Veikko to reach out again. A sincere attempt to repair what the fire had broken brings them back together, and they decide to stay, farming side by side and seeking a future rooted in shared purpose rather than faded memory. The film closes with a hopeful glimpse of tenacious family life: Anni and Veikko, now settled, bring their children to a community film screening, and Anni writes a letter to Hilkka, reflecting on how their perspectives on land and belonging have evolved. What began as a fragile bond born of loss matures into a durable, chosen family—one built on mutual support, hard work, and a deep sense of belonging to the land they have fought for and now call home.
