Vijay Kamal Singh, Sanjeev Kumar, is the troubled heir of a wealthy clan, his mind fraying in the wake of a heartbreaking sequence. He watches his lover Sapna marry his neighbor, Bihari Shatrughan Sinha, and that wedding night drums up tragedy when Sapna takes her own life at a Diwali party hosted by Bihari. The shock rattles Vijay to his core, leaving him adrift and unravled.

The family patriarch, Thakur Suraj Singh, Bipin Gupta, believes that a new marriage might steady Vijay’s nerves. He arranges for Chand, a tawaif, to pose as Vijay’s wife and provide the stabilizing presence the young man seems to need. Slowly, Chand grows into a steadying force in Vijay’s life, and an uneasy friendship develops between them, one that begins to lift the heavy fog from Vijay’s mind. But Bihari’s appetite for Chand does not end there. He turns his attention to Vijay’s younger sister, Radha Singh Jayshree Talpade, proffering promises of a Bollywood career and urging Radha to elope with him for a wash of money and gold from the family. Chand’s integrity puts a brake on his plans, and she resists his schemes even as she remains by Vijay’s side.

Meanwhile, Vijay’s other brother, Mohan Singh Jeetendra, finds himself strangely drawn to Chand as well. He is crushed to learn that she is pregnant with Vijay’s child, and heartache drives him to leave the family in distress, torn between affection and disapproval of the tangled web around Chand.

A clash between Vijay and Bihari culminates in a fatal tumble from a terrace. The fall appears to cure Vijay of his madness, but it also leaves him unable to recall Chand.
