In AD 1830, the town of Kayamkulam braces for the impending execution of Kochunni, the famed Mappila highwayman whose legend has grown with every rumor of his exploits.

The story begins with Kochunni’s father, Baputty, a once-proud thief who slips deeper into poverty, a life that hardens him and leaves his family vulnerable. A brutal confrontation with the local Brahmins leaves the young Kochunni witness to suffering, and his mother makes the painful choice to pull him away from a doomed future. He wanders away from home and ends up under the roof of a Brahmin landlord, where he works in a shop and tries to find a path that might spare him the fate that claimed his father.

As an adult, Kochunni spots Janaki, a servant from a lower caste, and a spark is lit. She introduces him to the world beyond poverty and teaches him about a martial-arts school run by Thangal, a celebrated master of combat. When a boy’s life hangs in the balance after a perilous plunge into a well to rescue him from a giant python, Kochunni earns a bravery medal from a British officer and wishes to celebrate with the local people at the fort. The officer grants his wish, opening the door to a life he never imagined.

Kochunni seeks out the martial-arts school, but Thangal initially rebuffs him, fearing that learning the arts could turn him into a thief of greater cunning. Janaki, steadfast in her love, encourages him to stay, and through patience—watching from a tree and learning by observation—Kochunni begins to master the basics. When Thangal finally tests him by pitting him against the school’s best pupil, Kunjikelu, Kochunni triumphs. Thangal’s heart softens, promising to teach him, while Kunjikelu leaves in anger, vowing revenge for the setback.

A stormy journey from Kochi changes everything. Kochunni’s trusted caretaker falls into Kayamkulam Lake, and when he dives to rescue him, a hidden stash of gold gleams at the bottom. The Brahmins press him to retrieve the gold, promising three wishes in return. He secures a bag of gold as a first wish, but the payoff is overshadowed by brutal backlash: the landlords’ henchmen beat him, and he’s accused of robbery, punished by immersion in boiling oil and hanging upside down for days. Janaki suffers exile from Kayamkulam for loving a man from a different caste, a wound that deepens Kochunni’s resolve.

Enter Ithikkara Pakki, a ruthless highwayman who frees Kochunni from his torment and invites him to seek vengeance against the Brahmins. In Pakki’s forest hideout, Kochunni endures brutal training with a small cadre—Mammad, Kunjikelu, and Noor Ahmed—and rises as a capable robber who targets Brahmins’ shops in the Kayamkulam market. Yet even as they strike, Kochunni draws a line: he refuses to sack his ex-caretaker’s store, choosing to protect those who once protected him, rather than to repay cruelty with cruelty.

With Pakki preparing to depart, Kochunni becomes a symbol for the oppressed, a Robin Hood of sorts for the downtrodden. The cunning administrator Keshavan schemes to topple him, weaving a plot that leverages Janaki’s fear and love to bring him down. In the end, Kochunni is condemned to death, a sentence that seems inescapable until Thangal reappears in the jail, their old bond rekindled and used to orchestrate a daring escape.

The hanging procession itself becomes a stage for revolt. Kalari skills surge into action as Kochunni fights his way free with Thangal’s help, and a clash erupts between British forces and the villagers led by the freed hero. The action crescendos into a dramatic, hard-won victory for the locals, reshaping the memory of an outlaw into a legend that the people will tell for generations.

In the present day, Kayamkulam’s memory endures in the image of Swathi Thirunal Rama Varma’s era, and the tale closes with a quiet epilogue showing a temple in the region—an enduring reminder of Kochunni’s life, his choices, and the price of rebellion against a rigid social order. The legend remains, a blend of daring and tragedy that continues to echo through the region.
