In Ranimaa’s household, the clerk raises his son Kaushal Sailesh Kumar and daughter Madhavi Meena Kumari, living with her own son Rajesh Dharmendra. After the clerk dies, Ranimaa steps in to raise the two children as her own, keeping a close, blended family that also includes Rajesh. Years pass, and Rajesh grows into a marriageable young man. He meets the beautiful Bhanu Saxena Padmini, and the two fall in love. Not long after, Kaushal dies in a boating accident, leaving Madhavi devastated, and Rajesh blames himself and Ranimaa for the loss.

A few months later, Rajesh marries Bhanu, who moves in with the family. Bhanu dislikes Madhavi and attempts to push her aside by insinuating that Madhavi is having an affair with Rajesh.
