In a small village near Madurai, Saravanan moves to Chennai and takes a job at a busy juice-and-tea stall where Mani is known as the “tea master.” Though he lacks formal schooling, Saravanan is thoughtful and well-read, carrying a quiet sense of curiosity about the world. His personal life takes a harsh turn when his lover, Anandhi, leaves him, citing his modest means and unfulfilled dreams. The heartbreak pushes Saravanan toward a desperate choice: he plots a theft against his landlady Sivagami, a kind woman who treats him like a brother, and he schemes to frame a neighbor he already dislikes.

After Saravanan steals Sivagami’s jewels, a chilling pattern unfolds: the misfortunes and pressures that once haunted Sivagami begin to mirror themselves in Saravanan’s life. The uncanny coincidences weigh heavily on him, and he resolves not to let his sister—or anyone else in his family—suffer the same fate. As the strange turn of events intensify, the hot-headed Kathir, Sivagami’s brother, starts to suspect Saravanan of more than theft, pulling the two men toward a dangerous close encounter.

Driven by a mixture of suspicion and self-preservation, Saravanan digs into Kathir’s past to understand the connection between their lives. What emerges is a troubling chain of events: Kathir had once committed a theft in his youth, stealing from Saravanan’s grandfather and, in the process, wrongfully accusing a colleague named Murugan. Murugan’s public shaming and the despair of his mother become a stain on everyone involved. The story widens to reveal more tragedies tied to Kavitha, Sivagami’s daughter, who is born blind, and to Sivagami’s husband, who falls ill and becomes bedbound. The ripple effects touch Kathir’s circle as well, including the death of Kumar, a friend of Kathir, in a railway accident that leaves his family destitute.

Meanwhile, Saravanan’s sister conveys startling news: she is pregnant, and an astrologer warns that health must be guarded. Kavitha, meanwhile, faces her own crisis as the jewels Saravanan stole were meant for her wedding. The wedding stalls, and panic drives Saravanan to react impulsively. He confronts Mani, who eventually takes the bag of jewels—and then disappears with it. Kavitha, overwhelmed by fear, attempts suicide; Saravanan rushes her to the hospital and vows to protect her, laying the groundwork for a serious, if uneasy, commitment.

A fragile reconciliation begins to form as Saravanan promises to marry Kavitha, despite opposition from Kathir. Mani returns later with a twist of fate—the bag Saravanan expects to see has been swapped for a bag full of clothing. Each man denies responsibility, and the two clash in a tense confrontation. Ten months pass, and Saravanan has become a husband and a share-auto driver, building a modest life with Kavitha. His world expands again when he reconciles with Mani during a fare ride, and his internal reflections reveal a surprising truth: Mani did not steal the jewels. Mani’s own flashback explains that the original bag was swapped with another passenger’s luggage on a bus—an act of embarrassment and misfortune, not malice, that led to the accusation against Saravanan.

The plot twist culminates in a heartbreaking revelation: the actual thief is revealed to be the passenger who took the jewels, who turns out to be Murugan’s son. Traumatized by how his innocent father was treated by the police, he chooses not to return the jewels, keeping them for his young daughter instead. A final photograph on the wall hints at an even older wound— Murugan’s mother had been blind—tying together the threads of guilt, misunderstanding, and long-held pain.

In the end, the story refuses a simple moral resolution. It presents a web of causality where choices, coincidences, and old wounds collide, leaving Saravanan to confront how far he has traveled from his village roots, how fragile a life built on luck and deception can be, and how the past continues to shape the present in surprising, often heartbreaking ways.
