Jiang Hu weaves two interlinked stories about loyalty, power, and the crooked path from youth to influence within a brutal gang world.

Mr. Hung, Andy Lau, is a seasoned gang leader who rules with a magnetic mix of charisma and ruthless discipline. His old ally and second-in-command, Lefty, Jacky Cheung, grows uneasy as Hung’s wife just gave birth. Lefty believes Hung’s new paternal responsibilities threaten the gang’s grip and dreams of steering the operation in a harsher, more tyrannical direction. Hung remains wary of ceding control, sensing that a family life could be read as weakness by their under-bosses. Rumors already swirl about Hung’s seeming vulnerability, and the atmosphere grows tense among the men who answer to them.

To protect his position, Lefty dispatches trusted henchmen to hunt down the three leading underbosses suspected of plotting a hit. One of the targets is killed, while Hung’s men manage to save the other two under his orders. The web of suspicion tightens as rumors spread that a traitor might be lurking within their ranks. In a tense turn, the guilty party attempts to call off the hit by feigning concern for his own family, but he cannot bring himself to pull the trigger after Hung’s loyal enforcers reassure him that his loved ones remain safe and untouched. The first story thus strands the men in a cycle of distrust, power plays, and fragile loyalties.

Meanwhile, a second narrative follows two teenage, low-ranking gang members, Yik and Turbo, who crave respect and an earned rank by pulling off a high-stakes hit on a rival gang leader (an unnamed figure in the story). Yik soils himself in the world he’s trying to rise within, visiting a brothel where he quietly admires a sex worker, while Turbo spirals into trouble with other gang members, which costs him the use of his right hand. Turbo’s brutal misadventure escalates when he is nearly drawn into a coercive act involving a dog, a fate that is narrowly prevented by Yik’s swift intervention. The trauma seeds a merciless, hardened outlook in Turbo, shaping him into a relentless partner in crime. Together, Yik and Turbo set out to complete the planned hit, a journey that tests their loyalty, courage, and the rapidly shifting codes of the world they inhabit.

As the film moves toward its climax, Hung confronts Lefty in a restaurant and lays bare the truth: Lefty was the one who leaked the news of Hung’s paternity. This revelation reframes their history and clarifies the fault lines that have driven so much of the violence around them. It is then revealed that Yik and Turbo are, in fact, young versions of Hung and Lefty—the same forces of ambition and camaraderie shaping the next generation. After a brief moment of reconciliation, the two former rivals find themselves surrounded by assassins. In a final act of solidarity, Hung and Lefty fend off the attackers together, but they are eventually overwhelmed and fall. The hit on the unnamed gang leader succeeds at last with Yik and Turbo delivering the killing blow, marking a grim transition from boyhood into the throne of power.

The closing image draws a stark line between past and present: the older Hung and Lefty’s sacrifice and the birth of a new power structure through Yik and Turbo. The film closes on the idea that the cycle of ambition, loyalty, and violence will continue, leaving viewers with a quiet, probing message about how respect and leadership are earned—and how easily they can be earned anew by the next generation.
