The story unfolds as the Creeper takes on the guise of a scarecrow in a cornfield, biding its time to abduct the child of Jack Taggart (Ray Wise), who, upon discovering the creature’s true nature, yearns for vengeance against it after witnessing his son being taken away.

As the clock ticks down to the 23rd and final day of the Creeper’s rampage, a bus filled with high school basketball players, cheerleaders, and their coaches heads home from a championship game on East 9 Highway. In a chilling turn of events, the Creeper launches a spike, crafted from the remains of its previous victims, causing one of the bus tires to blow out. As night descends, the Creeper swoops down, snatching the coaches while instilling terror in the hearts of the remaining teenagers.
