In the film, viewers are introduced to a fascinating concept involving Infinites, individuals who possess the extraordinary ability to remember their past lives. The story explores the existence of two main groups among the Infinites: Believers, who aim to harness their powers to shape and influence the future, and Nihilists, who have a darker purpose — to bring about the end of mankind by using advanced technology. This division sets the stage for a high-stakes conflict centered around a dangerous superweapon called The Egg, which has the potential to wipe out all life on Earth.

The narrative begins in 1986 in Mexico City, where Dylan O’Brien portrays Heinrich Treadway, a Believer who is desperately trying to escape from Nihilists eager to retrieve The Egg. During a tense chase, Treadway, wounded, uses his extraordinary abilities to make a daring leap from a bridge onto a crane, narrowly escaping after a car crash that kills his accomplices, Tom Hughes as Abel, and Joana Ribeiro as Leona. Before dying, Leona tells Abel that they will reunite “at the Beginning,” hinting at a recurring cycle of reincarnation that is central to the film’s universe. As a mysterious figure appears with a weapon called a Dethroner, it becomes clear that this confrontation is part of a larger, ongoing battle over the fate of humanity.

The story then shifts to present day, where Mark Wahlberg plays Evan McCauley, a man plagued by schizophrenia and conflicting memories of his past lives, which he cannot fully understand or control. Despite his struggles, Evan seeks a normal life but quickly finds himself embroiled in chaos after an encounter with a drug dealer named Ronny, played by Jack Roth. During a confrontation over medication, Evan disarms Ronny, revealing his formidable skills with a sword from Edo Japan, and manages to escape a dangerous situation. His visions become more intense, leading him to fall onto a car and experience flashes of past identities, which make him question his reality.

Soon, a mysterious figure named Bathurst — played by Chiwetel Ejiofor — recognizes Evan as Treadway, linking him to the earlier events in Mexico City. Bathurst, along with his partner Shin, seeks to control The Egg for their own purposes, which includes ending the cycle of reincarnation to prevent the endless conflict among Infinites. Sophie Cookson as Nora Brightman appears as another Infinite, who helps Evan escape from Bathurst’s pursuit. She explains that Evan is an Infinite, someone who retains memories from multiple past lives, which explains his unique nature and abilities.

As Evan is introduced to a hidden community of Infinites, such as Garrick, played by Liz Carr, they reveal the danger wielded by The Egg. The superweapon is capable of initiating a slow, devastating extinction — first targeting animals, then plants, and finally humans. The group works together to uncover the location of The Egg and unlock Evan’s memories about his previous life as Heinrich Treadway. It is through a series of intense training sessions and near-death experiences that Evan begins to recall critical details, including how The Egg was hidden inside his own abdomen by Treadway after a violent fight with Bathurst.

The plot thickens as Bathurst captures and tortures Bryan Porter, an Infinite helpful to Nora, to find out more about Evan’s whereabouts. The team then seeks assistance from The Artisan — a wise and powerful Infinite played by Jason Mantzoukas — who performs a near-death ritual to ignite Evan’s suppressed memories. During this process, Evan vividly recalls the night Treadway died, revealing that Bathurst, who was once his ally, had betrayed him and implanted The Egg in Treadway’s abdomen to keep it hidden.

The climax unfolds with Bathurst and his team attacking the Infinites’ headquarters, stealing Treadway’s body with The Egg, and taking it aboard a plane. Evan, determined to stop Bathurst’s plan, tracks him to his estate. In a fierce confrontation on the plane, Evan fights Bathurst, utilizing his incredible powers, culminating in both of them falling from the aircraft with The Egg. Evan manages to kill Bathurst with the Dethroner, ending his reign of terror and preventing the activation of The Egg. In a heroic act, Evan deactivates The Egg and sacrifices himself by plunging into the ocean, ensuring that it cannot threaten the world again.

Meanwhile, Nora, aware of the cyclical nature of their existence, chooses to sacrifice herself to stop the cycle of rebirth and destruction. The story closes with a glimpse of the next reincarnation, as the Svetlana Yasinskaya’s character locates a young boy in Jakarta, hinting that the battle is destined to continue. The The Artisan gives the boy a sword and a call to witness his emerging powers, asking, “What took him so long to find him?”, emphasizing that this cycle of conflict and rebirth is far from over.

This film explores themes of reincarnation, the quest for free will versus control, and the relentless fight between forces that seek to determine humanity’s destiny, all woven into a thrilling narrative of past lives, futuristic technology, and eternal conflict.
