In the wake of a major World War II battle, Brigadier General Charles Lane, Master Sergeant Murph Savage, and Corporal Chan Derby find themselves cut off behind enemy lines. They shelter in the French countryside and brace for a prolonged stand, with supplies dwindling and pressure from the enemy intensifying. The odds are against them, but a defensive hold around a farmhouse becomes their best option.

Lane locates a vulnerable gap and plans a defense

Lane studies the scattered troops and identifies a critical gap in the American lines. He proposes organizing a defensive perimeter using whatever stragglers they can muster. The plan hinges on discipline, steady leadership, and teamwork to delay the enemy advance.

Lane sacrifices himself to save Murph

During a dangerous moment, Lane vaults into the line of fire to shield Murph, paying with his life. His sacrifice buys precious time for the others and cements the need for strong leadership in the isolated force. Murph is left to continue the defense in Lane's stead.

Private Orville Hutchmeyer, who knows Murph's real identity, becomes a sly threat to the ruse. He pressures Murph to reveal himself and uses rumors to undermine morale. Murph must navigate his adversary without exposing the deception.

The deception delays German exploitation

Despite the risks, Murph's impersonation continues to hold the line as German forces probe for weakness. The ruse buys time for neighboring units and prevents a breakthrough into the farmhouse position. The defenders’ stubborn defense hinges on Murph's convincing leadership.

Shrapnel ends the ruse—Murph is knocked out

Shrapnel tears through the defense, knocking Murph unconscious and making it appear as though he has died. The ruse collapses in the immediate aftermath, forcing the remaining troops to adjust to a leadership vacuum. Murph's true identity is temporarily restored as the action winds down.

General Lane is honored posthumously for Murph's actions

In recognition of the successful defense and Murph's impersonation, General Lane is posthumously honored. The sacrifice that allowed the stand to endure becomes the defining moment of the engagement. The ceremony acknowledges Lane's leadership and the bravery of the small group.

Murph reveals his true identity and returns to duty
