Imitation General 1958

Brig. Gen. Charles Lane, MSgt. Murphy Savage, and Cpl. Chan Derby are left behind enemy lines after a brutal World War II battle. They find sanctuary in a farmhouse owned by a wary Simone, and Lane quickly surveys the torn map of the front, identifying a vulnerable gap in the American lines. With that insight, he begins to organize a defensive stand using whatever scattered troops and resources they can rally. The effort is short-lived, however, as Lane is killed while performing a selfless act to save Murph’s life, a moment that marks a turning point for everyone involved.

The next arrivals shift the dynamic dramatically. The first American to reach their makeshift defense is Cpl. Terry Sellers, who mistakingly takes Murph for Lane because Murph still holds the fallen general’s helmet. Seizing the moment, Murph conceives a bold plan: step into Lane’s shoes, rally the disordered troops, and stiffen the line against the advancing German forces. With the reluctant aid of Cpl. Chan Derby and Simone, Murph dons the mantle of leadership, attempting to hold the line against a series of brazen tank assaults. All the while, he must steer clear of the calculating and resentful Pvt. Orville Hutchmeyer, a local soldier who knows Murph too well and bears a grudge that complicates every move.

As the engagement unfolds, Murph’s ruse succeeds in stabilizing the resistance long enough for the defense to endure, but the price is steep. A shrapnel blast knocks him out, creating the dramatic illusion of his death while enabling him to return to his true identity later. In the end, the story circles back to the original act of sacrifice: Brig. Gen. Charles Lane is honored posthumously for Murph’s courageous deception and steadfast leadership, a tribute that cements the tenuous line between heroism and survival in the chaos of war.
