What Is Green Grass of Wyoming About?

The premise of Green Grass of Wyoming in 271 words, with nothing given away. The full story follows below.

Set against the sweeping majesty of the Rocky Mountains, the Wyoming ranching country unfolds as a land where untamed wilderness and human ambition constantly collide. At the heart of this rugged terrain roams Thunderhead, a magnificent white stallion whose wild spirit has long captured the imagination of local ranchers — and whose habit of claiming mares from nearby spreads has earned him both admiration and frustration in equal measure.

The McLaughlin family, led by the practical Rob McLaughlin, has an unusual history with this legendary horse. Years earlier, Ken McLaughlin had freed Thunderhead, forging a bond between boy and stallion that speaks to something deeper than mere ownership. Now returning from a horse-selling journey with hard-earned profits in hand, Ken finds himself drawn into the complex rhythms of ranch life once more — and into the orbit of the neighboring Greenway family, whose fierce patriarch Beaver Greenway harbors his own strong feelings about the wandering stallion.

As tensions rise among ranchers concerned about their herds, a new presence arrives in the form of Crown Jewel, a elegant trotter with promise. The collision of competing interests — between ranchers, between families, and between domesticated horses and their wild counterparts — sets the stage for an adventure that spans from Wyoming’s high country to the competitive world of harness racing.

Romance blossoms alongside rivalry, mirroring the primal dance between the untamed Thunderhead and the mares he claims. In this world where humans and horses move in parallel stories of longing and belonging, the Green Grass of Wyoming offers a stirring tale of connection tested by distance, pride, and the call of the wild.

Spoilers ahead

Beaver Greenway, Charles Coburn, is furious when Thunderhead, the white stallion that Ken McLaughlin Robert Arthur freed years earlier, steals another of his mares. Rob McLaughlin, Lloyd Nolan, organizes other ranchers to hunt Thunderhead, who, like his great-grandsire the Albino before him, has taken mares from local ranches. Meanwhile, Ken McLaughlin returns from a horse-selling trip with profits that he uses to buy Crown Jewel, a trotter, and though Rob is skeptical at first, he eventually agrees to train the mare for harness racing. One night, Thunderhead appears again and runs off with Crown Jewel. The next day, Rob leads a search party to locate them and shoots Thunderhead, though Ken is determined to save him. They locate and round up Thunderhead’s herd, but the stallion and Crown Jewel escape. Ken finds the pair hiding nearby and persuades Thunderhead to return to the ranch for good.

When Crown Jewel develops altitude sickness from living in the Wyoming hills, a veterinarian, Charles Tannen, warns that her lungs are congested and suggests putting her down; Greenway instead prescribes an old-fashioned remedy that works. Meanwhile, Ken and Greenway’s granddaughter Carey Greenway, Peggy Cummins, develop a romance.

Crown Jewel, fully recovered and trained, is entered in the Ohio Governor’s Cup sweepstakes. Greenway, a former sulky driver, competes with his own horse, Sundance. Ken drives Crown Jewel, who is leading, but she breaks stride during the race, disqualifying them. Greenway and Sundance win. The McLaughlins remain proud of Crown Jewel’s effort, especially upon learning she is in foal and Thunderhead is the sire.
