Greatest Days 2023

Rachel, a dedicated nurse living in London, unexpectedly becomes the winner of a radio competition that awards her tickets to a long-awaited reunion concert in Athens for her childhood favorite boy band, The Boys, who are reminiscent of Take That. Initially, Rachel’s intention is to attend the concert with her long-time partner, Jeff, who has frequently proposed marriage, but Rachel has yet to accept any of his proposals. To escape the pressures of her relationship, Rachel decides to take a caravan trip up North. However, Jeff manages to find her, prompting Rachel to reveal her decision to invite her childhood friends — Heather, Zoe, and Clare — to join her on this nostalgic journey, friends she has not seen in a staggering 25 years.

Throughout a series of flashbacks, the deep bond shared among Rachel, Heather, Zoe, Clare, and Debbie is illuminated. They were devoted fans of The Boys as young girls, and during their school years, Rachel grapples with the emotional turmoil stemming from her parents’ deteriorating relationship. As she comforts her brother Ryan, Rachel is restricted by her father from watching The Boys perform on Top of the Pops. In response, she retreats into a fantasy realm where the band symbolizes comfort, singing songs like Pray. The group bonds even further when they skip school to cheer on Clare during her diving competition, where stress overwhelms her. Yet, her friends encourage her to make the leap, following an own crescendo of emotional support underscored by an instrumental rendition of Said It All. Later on, Debbie secures tickets for all five girls to see The Boys perform live in Manchester, during which they sing a medley featuring Promises and Babe. After the concert, a failed attempt to meet the band turns into a night of unforeseen adventures as they miss the last train home. With the assistance of a bus driver, they enjoy an imaginative ride back, culminating in a night spent on the moors staring at the stars. Debbie gifts each friend a wristband, ensuring they remember the promises made that night for the rest of their lives.

Fast forward to the present, Rachel reconnects with Heather, who is now a renowned fashion designer; Zoe, who has become a university professor; and Clare, who maintains her roots in their hometown. Together, these four women embark on their journey to Athens, filled with heartfelt reflections and spontaneous performances, particularly one moving display of Shine performed by airport staff joined by The Boys.

In Athens, they take the city by storm on electric scooters, with joyous locals erupting in song and dance, especially during performances of Greatest Day and a playful experience involving a fountain. However, reality hits when they find themselves detained for causing a ruckus in the fountain, leading to conversations about their past and the divergent paths their lives have taken. Zoe juggles her life as a mother of four sons, while Clare opens up about leaving her diving dreams behind after being unable to compete due to the absence of her friends as a support system. The imagined presence of The Boys reverberates through their journey, taking center stage with songs like Said It All and The Flood.

Eventually, following an emotional rollercoaster, they catch a train to the concert while singing The Flood. During this journey, buskers Gary Barlow, Howard Donald, and Mark Owen warmly welcome them with their own rendition of Shine.
