Sent by the British Museum to oversee the shipment of important artefacts to London, David Redfern, Trevor Howard, pushes along a lonely Tunisian road until a landslide blocks his path. In the pouring rain, he makes his way to a small town and, just before arriving, witnesses a gun-running operation. In the town’s café he meets Anna, a young Frenchwoman who had moved to North Africa with her brother Max during the wartime German occupation of France. Realising that Max, Jacques Sernas, is entangled in the criminal trade, Redfern decides to keep quiet about what he saw and focus on his job of moving the artefacts as quickly as possible.

As he spends time with Anna, Redfern falls in love and resolves to help Max escape from the criminal life and send him to Paris, where he could start anew as a painter. However, Max is killed by one of his associates on the way to Tunis.

Realising that Redfern knows too much about their operations, Serafis, Walter Rilla, the head of the outfit, and his henchman Rankl, Herbert Lom, plan to kill him and make it look like an accident. With the help of a friend, Redfern manages to escape. Tracked by his enemies during the town’s annual boar hunt, he ultimately demonstrates to the authorities that the gang murdered Max.
