On the east coast of Sabah, Jimmy is a young man who spends his days cleaning up the rubbish that blotches the sea village he loves. He refuses to take on any other work, choosing instead to devote himself to protecting the environment, a stance that makes him an outcast and the butt of jokes among the villagers. His only friend is Orix. He dreams of a life with his childhood sweetheart, Aspalela, who returns his feelings and seems to share his stubborn resolve to keep the coastline clean and healthy.

Eager to marry Aspalela, Jimmy asks Wan Pagek for her hand, only to learn that Wan Pagek believes he must own land first before such a union can happen. Undeterred, Jimmy channels his stubborn optimism into a daring, almost miraculous plan: he builds a floating island out of discarded rubbish and constructs a tiny hut upon it. The improbable feat amuses some and provokes others, including Kordi, a rival who also wants Aspalela for himself. The village watches with a mix of wonder and skepticism as Jimmy’s floating platform begins to take shape, a strange beacon of his environmental devotion.

One night, a remarkable visitor arrives: a mermaid named Puteri. She is drawn to Jimmy’s relentless efforts and quietly assists as the island fortress fortifies itself. Jimmy, emboldened by the appearance of this mythical ally, boasts to the village that he has met a mermaid. But when Puteri refuses to surface on cue, the villagers see Jimmy as a crazy liar and his father disowns him, unable to accept the fantastical explanation behind his sudden windfall of luck. Puteri returns to remind him that their friendship must remain a secret, and she leads him to an underwater cave filled with pirate treasure. Lonely and longing for companionship, she confesses her growing feelings for Jimmy, while he remains torn—truly in love with Aspalela but financially unable to secure a future with her. Puteri offers to help, proposing to share her treasure, yet Jimmy declines, choosing a path grounded in love and principle rather than sudden wealth.

After Jimmy’s return to the island, he wakes to discover two boxes of treasure left for him by Puteri. With this unexpected windfall, he quickly earns the favor of the villagers and the respect of Aspalela’s father, reshaping how his community views him. Yet the rumors and suspicions around his good fortune do not fade away; Kordi grows wary and moves to seize the advantage. He comes to the island, captures Puteri, and imprisons her in a cage, charging villagers to glimpse the mermaid. Jimmy’s father witnesses the truth of Puteri’s existence and realizes his son isn’t crazy after all, inspiring a united effort to rescue her.

Jimmy, Orix, Aspalela, and both sets of parents rally together to free Puteri. They succeed, and before parting, Puteri wishes Jimmy happiness with Aspalela and slips back into the ocean, leaving the village with a renewed sense of purpose and a bittersweet farewell. In the final, hopeful epilogue set three years later, Jimmy and Aspalela are married, and Kordi works for them as the village flourishes under their environmental stewardship. The villagers contribute to a communal effort to monitor and protect the coast, a testament toJimmy’s enduring mission. He narrates that he hasn’t seen Puteri since their goodbye, though she is briefly glimpsed visiting the village with a merman by her side, hinting at a world beyond the surface where their unlikely friendship might still shimmer.
