One day, while lunching on a scaffolding, Capulina accidentally spills paint onto a policeman below, prompting him to flee by stepping off the scaffold. He plummets briefly, then clings to Viruta as he steadies himself against a nearby window. On the opposite side of that glass, a man named Lorenzo stabs a woman while his lover Carmina watches from a distance. Capulina stands by the window, and Lorenzo and Carmina recognize him; he mutters that he has “never seen death from up close.”
