Kat Boyles, a struggling stand-up comedian and part-time teacher at an improv acting school in London, is approached by Graham Billings, detective sergeant of the Metropolitan Police, who is looking for talented improv actors for use in low-level sting operations. With a group of three required for this job, Kat picks two of her most recent students - Marlon Swift, an aspiring drama actor eager to find his breakthrough role; and Hugh, a klutzy, awkward IT worker who tries to fit in with his joke-spouting colleagues - to help her (albeit reluctantly, since they’re the only choices left).
Billings briefs the trio about a rise in the sale of counterfeit cigarettes and sends them to a tobacco store suspected to be involved in these illicit dealings. Although Hugh nearly busts the operation, the store vendor takes the three to Fly, his underground supplier, whom Kat manages to convince that they’re seasoned in criminal dealings. The investigation takes on a whole new level when Fly asks them to take three bricks of cocaine which his men recently swiped from a rival Albanian gang off his hands. Just then, the Albanians burst in, demanding their drugs back; Kat claims the drugs are theirs, and quickly initiates an auction, causing the Albanians to unknowingly buy back their own drugs. Impressed, Fly offers Kat, Marlon and Hugh a job, and Billings seizes the chance and conscribes them to infiltrate and take out Fly from within his own organization, claiming that he’ll have a tactical backup team ready for them if things go too far.
Kat, Marlon, and Hugh become known as Bonnie, Roach, and The Squire, respectively. Fly sends the trio to a client that owes him money, Sagar. After intimidating him, Sagar tries to run away, but ends up getting hit by van, killing him. The trio take a photo of Sagar, and grab his cash. The police are notified, and the leader in the investigation, Dawes (and his assistant Skender), believes that the trio are a new group of hard-core criminals in town, especially since Sagar was known to the police as a hardcore assassin known as the Iceman. Fly and his associate, Shosh, are impressed that they took out the Iceman, and invite them to celebrate his birthday with him. Later, Fly opens up to the trio about his life, and how his daughter is currently in Portugal. While talking, Fly gets a call from his boss, Metcalfe, who wants to meet them.
Metcalfe says the Albanians are aware that the drugs they bought from Bonnie are the same ones Fly stole from them, and is trying to make peace with them. However, in the event he can’t, Metcalfe sends the trio to see if they can sample drugs from another dealer, K-Lash. Unfortunately, K-Lash and her crew are only interested in selling canisters of nitrous oxide, which isn’t illegal. Marlon, as Roach, tries to convince K-Lash to treat them as serious dealers and give them drugs, but it fails. However, before K-Lash’s crew can kill the trio, Billings arrives in tactical gear, scaring them off. Billings is disappointed in the lack of high-stakes money or drugs. Noticing that Billings came without any backup team, Kat realizes that they’re not officially under cover, Billings is a dirty cop using them to make a quick buck. Billings admits it, but shows them his encrypted phone, which is the only evidence that could prove that they’re working for him, otherwise they could be arrested for killing Sagar. Billings then blackmails them into working for him until they takedown Metcalfe, but is killed by Shosh.
Shosh brings the trio and Billings’ corpse to Metcalfe, who notices Billings’ phone. While Metcalfe has someone hack the phone to find who was working for Billings, he has Shosh prep a burial site to get rid of Billings’ corpse, while the trio is forced to dismember the body. After dumping the body, they learn from Shosh where the phone is being hacked. While Hugh is invited to Shosh’s place, Kat and Marlon go to retrieve the phone, but get caught by Metcalfe’s men. Metcalfe lets Fly know the deal is back on with the Albanians, and orders Fly to kill the trio.
Fly and Shosh take the trio to a field, but rather than kill them, Fly lets them go. The trio plan to go into hiding, but Dawes’ police force end up finding and capturing him. Dawes and Skender are applauded, as they believe they’ve captured some big criminal players, but are disappointed to find out the trio is only a group of improv actors. Without evidence that Billings hired them, they’d go to jail, but Kat gets an idea: They’ll go to Fly as undercover cops, who will wear a wire and record the drug deal between Metcalfe and the Albanians. In exchange, Fly will be given immunity and go to Portugal. When Metcalfe offers the Albanians to kill Fly, the trio interrupt the deal and rescue Fly while the cops take down the dealers. Just when they think they’re safe, Metcalfe corners them with a gun, but is killed by Shosh. Knowing the police will arrest her, Hugh warns her to leave. Shosh says goodbye to Hugh, calling him “Squire” one last time. Fly, realizing that Marlon was holding a fake gun, asks the trio who they really are. After learning they’re just improv actors, he gives them each a wad of cash from Metcalfe’s briefcase as thanks.
Dawes and Skender are thankful for the trio’s help, as not only did they succeed in taking down two big criminal groups, but they’ve also been promoted. However, they can’t publicly admit they had help from the trio, in case they need their help in later cases. Marlon auditions for a serious role by borrowing monologue from Fly, and Hugh opens his own wine shop, being a more confident person than he was in his previous job. Meanwhile, Kat has gotten new and returning students in her improv class, due to rumors of her being an undercover cop. Rather than address the rumors, Kat jumps straight into teaching.
