The story begins during a swim relay at the University of Florida where Haley Keller delivers a commendable performance, albeit missing her personal best time. This stirs up memories of a childhood loss in a relay race, which brings back feelings of disappointment. Nevertheless, her father Dave has always been her steadfast supporter, urging her to persist and maintain her dedication.

Following the event, Haley receives an urgent video call from her sister Beth, who is anxious about the looming threats of Category 5 Hurricane Wendy approaching Florida. Beth is deeply concerned since she has been unable to reach their father, whom she fears is still in the storm’s path. Their conversation turns tense, revealing underlying family tensions, as Beth believes Haley sided with their father during their parents’ divorce, while Beth has remained loyal to their mother. Ultimately, Beth pleads with Haley to contact Dave, emphasizing the importance of family in dire times.

Compelled by concern for her father, Haley begins her journey to evacuate town, but despite her efforts, she struggles to contact Dave. During her drive, she encounters Wayne, an old acquaintance and ex-boyfriend of Beth, portrayed by Ross Anderson, who is attempting to manage traffic chaos as the impending storm looms closer. After gathering directions, Haley’s worry for her father pushes her to turn back and navigate a detour to find him.

Upon reaching Dave’s condo, Haley is disheartened to find it deserted, with only his dog, Sugar, remaining. After alerting Beth about her findings, Haley theorizes that their father might be at their old family home. Ignoring Beth’s warnings about rising floodwaters, she takes Sugar and heads toward the house. Upon arrival, she searches desperately, finding no sign of Dave upstairs. Fueled by Sugar’s persistent barking, Haley ventures into the basement, where she finally finds Dave, unconscious and severely injured with a broken leg.
