Color Out of Space 2019

After his wife Theresa Gardner, Joely Richardson underwent mastectomy, Nathan Gardner moves his family—Lavinia Gardner, Benny Gardner, and Jack Gardner—to his late father’s farm. A brilliant, rainbow-hued meteorite suddenly crashes onto their front yard near the well, shattering the quiet of the countryside and stirring questions about what lies beneath the surface. By morning, hydrologist Ward Phillips, Elliot Knight, is in town surveying for a dam project, accompanied by the mayor, Q’orianka Kilcher, and the sheriff, Josh C. Waller. They come to examine the meteor and its potential impact on local life, especially the water supply, and a tense curiosity begins to ripple through the family and the community alike.

As Ward investigates, he notices the groundwater taking on an oily sheen, and the substance glows with the meteor’s strange colors when his tests come into contact with it. He cautions the Gardners not to drink the water, but the family soon finds themselves drawn into a cascade of inexplicable phenomena. Jack becomes fixated on the property’s well, reporting odd growths on plants and insects and insisting that he can communicate with a hidden “friend” inside the well. Meanwhile, Theresa, while preparing dinner, abruptly cuts off two fingers, a shocking event that pushes the family toward crisis. Benny goes outside to shepherd the alpacas back to their stables and does not return for hours, claiming that time moved in a way that made the night vanish in an instant. Lavinia, desperate to reach her father, attempts repeatedly to contact him by phone, but their lines seem to fail in the fog of something unseen. The mounting tension spills over when Nathan returns and lashes out at Benny and Lavinia with a blistering fury that feels uncharacteristic and dangerous.

Despair deepens as the land itself seems to wither—the crops desiccate and the farm’s atmosphere grows thicker with dread. In a desperate bid to save the family, Lavinia turns to the Necronomicon for a ritual, offering her own blood in an attempt to restore balance and safety to the house. The act is brutal and haunting, leaving a mark on her as well as the family. In a terrifying turn, Theresa overhears Jack and Benny screaming in the alpaca stables, and the Color begins to emerge more vividly around the property. A bolt of the Color fuses Theresa and Jack into a grotesque, fused mass, signaling that nothing in their world remains untouched by the otherworldly force. With all electronic devices dead, the family is cut off from the outside world, and Nathan and the children retreat to the attic to shield the now-mutated victims from the harmful sunlight that wrecks them.

The horror deepens when Benny reveals that the alpacas were likewise mutated and fused by the Color, forcing Nathan to euthanize them with a shotgun. As the tension frays the edges of sanity, Nathan, consumed by fear and grief, attempts to euthanize Theresa and Jack, but he cannot bring himself to end their lives. Lavinia and Benny try to flee the nightmare on horseback, but the horse bolts and disappears into the surrounding desolation. Benny insists he hears the family’s dog in the well, and when he climbs down to investigate, he is absorbed by the Color. The patriarch’s grip on reality collapses entirely, and he locks Lavinia in the attic with Theresa and Jack, who have become monstrous threats.

Ward and the sheriff return when a neighbor surfaces with news of a strange, fused mass of animals. They break into the attic to rescue Lavinia, and Nathan, now wholly invaded by the Color, shoots and kills the monster before turning his gun on the source of the danger—hoping to end the threat once and for all. Ward pulls Lavinia outside as the Color emerges from the well and coils toward the sky. Nathan’s life ends in a final, tragic moment as the sheriff, misreading the situation, shoots him. Lavinia insists on staying with the dying Nathan, and Ward and the sheriff depart to search Ezra’s cabin for help.

Ezra’s cabin holds a grim clue: a desiccated body and an audio recorder that speaks with a haunting voice, explaining that the Color seeks to reshape its surroundings into something familiar to its kind. The two men flee a violent outburst of the Color, but a mutated tree outside the cabin strikes down the sheriff. Ward returns to rescue Lavinia, only to find her completely possessed by the alien force, which erupts from the well and forms a widening funnel toward the heavens. Ward is shown a vision of the Color’s origin—a psychedelic exoplanet inhabited by tentacled beings—before Lavinia disintegrates. As space and time bend, Ward hides from a malevolent vision of Nathan inside the ruined farmhouse and eventually emerges as the sole survivor, stepping out of the colorless, blasted wreckage of the land.

In an epilogue, an older Ward surveys the dam atop the finished reservoir, a quiet but somber reminder of the catastrophe. He speaks of the incident in hushed tones, declaring that he will never drink the water again and that the Color was a messenger from a realm beyond human understanding. As he departs, a single insect mutated by the Color flies by, a quiet, unsettling reminder that the inexplicable lingered long after the scene faded.
