What Is Borgman About?
The premise of Borgman in 289 words, with nothing given away. The full story follows below.
In a quiet, affluent Dutch suburb, a well‑to‑die‑known family lives behind polished walls and manicured gardens. The household, headed by Richard and his wife Marina and filled with the restless energy of their three children, appears to embody the comfort and order that wealth can purchase. Yet beneath the surface, routine shadows linger, hinting at unspoken anxieties and a delicate balance that could be easily unsettled.
Into this realm steps a figure known only as Borgman, a man whose arrival feels both accidental and purposeful. He presents himself with a mixture of urgency and vulnerability, seeking shelter while exuding an unsettling confidence that seems out of place among the family’s genteel surroundings. His presence begins to ripple through the household, stirring curiosities, hidden desires, and a subtle shift in the way each member perceives their own roles. As Richard wrestles with his instinct to protect his domain and Marina confronts a lingering sense of guilt and fascination, the children sense a change in the currents of their home, though they cannot yet name it.
The film paints this intrusion with a brooding, almost clinical aesthetic, letting the quietude of the family’s estate contrast with the ambiguous aura of the newcomer. Light filters through lace curtains, shadows linger at the edge of polished rooms, and an undercurrent of unease hums beneath polite conversation. Themes of class, privilege, and the fragile nature of human connection emerge without exposition, inviting the audience to wonder whether Borgman is a symptom of the family’s hidden cracks or a catalyst exposing deeper truths. The mood remains taut and atmospheric, leaving viewers perched on the edge of intrigue, questioning the true purpose of the enigmatic visitor and the delicate veneer of the life he temporarily invades.

An armed priest, together with two other men, drives a hobo and his companions from their underground hideouts. The hobo Anton, Jan Bijvoet, then appears at the door of a mansion. There, he encounters Richard Jeroen Perceval and Marina Hadewych Minis, an upper-class couple with three children. He claims he knows Marina, that she nursed him in hospital, and he begs for food and a bath. Because of his aggressive behavior, Richard becomes furious and beats him. Yet Marina, driven by guilt and curiosity, decides to help him and allows him to stay in the garden shed, without Richard knowing it. During Richard’s absence, Anton apparently befriends Marina and the three children, and he wields an eerie power to influence Marina’s dreams, causing her to grow to dislike her husband while growing closer to Anton.
One day Anton leaves the family and meets his mysterious team, Ludwig, Pascal, Brenda and Ilonka, who hatch a very sinister plot against the family. They poison the family gardener and strangle his wife, then return to the family. Now well-dressed and shaven, Anton identifies himself as Camiel Borgman Jan Bijvoet and becomes the new gardener. He takes the guest room while his team settles in the garden shed, and they slowly begin to assume roles in the life of the family.
Soon it is revealed that Camiel and his team have the ability to control people, corrupting their minds or killing them in cold blood if deemed necessary. Camiel seduces Marina [Hadewych Minis], to the point that she starts to despise her husband, while Pascal seduces the family babysitter Stine, turning her against her boyfriend. The team also takes the children into the hideout to perform some kind of surgery on them, making them more comfortable with Camiel and his group than with their own parents. The team then poisons Richard. Marina, hoping to be with Camiel, is shocked when he calmly refuses her advances. He poisons her later, and both she and Richard are buried under the garden. Camiel, his team, Stine and the children then depart into the forest.
