Walter Enlists

Walter, motivated by a sense of duty, announces to his family his decision to enlist in the army. This decision marks a turning point for the Bonhoeffer family, as they now confront the imminent dangers of the Great War.

Walter's Death

Tragedy strikes in 1918 when Walter is killed in combat during World War I. The Bonhoeffer family gathers to mourn his loss at his funeral, marking a profound change in their lives as they grapple with grief and the impact of war on their family.

Theology Studies in the U.S.

Years later, Dietrich Bonhoeffer embarks on a journey to the United States to study theology. This period of study not only deepens his faith but also exposes him to new perspectives on social justice.

Meeting Frank

While studying in the U.S., Bonhoeffer meets Frank, an African-American seminarian. This friendship leads Bonhoeffer to the Abyssinian Baptist Church in Harlem, where he is inspired by the messages of social justice and equality.

Awakening to Injustice

At the Abyssinian Baptist Church, Bonhoeffer listens to Adam Clayton Powell Sr. preach about the social injustices faced by minorities. This experience greatly influences Bonhoeffer's understanding of morality and justice, shaping his future actions.

Return to Germany

Upon returning to Germany, Bonhoeffer becomes increasingly aware of the Nazi Party's rise to power and its encroachment on the nation’s churches. His family's worry reflects the broader societal concerns regarding the Nazis’ destructive policies and ideologies.

Opposition to Nazism

Bonhoeffer openly opposes the changes the Nazis impose on German churches, perceiving their actions as sacrilegious. His steadfast beliefs put him at odds with many in the society that is increasingly succumbing to the regime's influence.

Underground Seminary

In response to the growing corruption within the churches, Bonhoeffer establishes an underground seminary in Finkenwalde. This seminary is dedicated to training pastors who will stand firm against Nazi ideology, promoting a true Confessing Church.

Arrest by Gestapo

In April 1943, Bonhoeffer’s anti-Nazi activities catch up with him when he is arrested by the Gestapo. His imprisonment marks a significant moment in his life and the intensification of government repression against dissenters.

Transfer to Concentration Camp

Following his time at Tegel Prison, Bonhoeffer is transferred to Flossenbürg concentration camp. His circumstances worsen as the Nazi regime becomes increasingly brutal towards political prisoners.

Assassination Plot Accusation

Bonhoeffer is accused of complicity in the 20 July plot, a failed attempt to assassinate Adolf Hitler. This baseless charge reflects the paranoia and harsh reprisals characteristic of the Nazi regime during its final days.
