In Denver, 1982, Finney Blake, Mason Thames, has built a reputation as a rough-edged kid who doesn’t back down. He’s still haunted by the nights he faced The Grabber, and although his father’s absence and the family’s struggles have shifted the dynamic at home, the trauma refuses to stay buried. Finney’s coping ritual is weed, a thin shield that dulls the edges of memory, yet the echoes of that past experiment with fear never quite fade. Gwen, played by Madeleine McGraw, calls him out on his latest outburst, catching him in a moment of brutal force with a new kid who tried to test him. The confrontation shows Finney’s instinct to protect others, even as his own pain seeps through the cracks. The two have formed a cautious alliance, bonded by shared history and a stubborn stubbornness to survive. Meanwhile, Ernesto, known as Ernie, Miguel Mora, is Robin’s younger brother and a quiet, always-present friend who keeps the group tethered to something normal in the storm of memories.

The kids hatch a plan to investigate through a practical route: they’ll become Counselors in Training at Camp Alpine Lake to search for answers. They enlist Ernesto and set their sights on the camp’s staff, including Armando, the camp manager, and his niece Mustang Arianna Rivas. The trio travels in a snowstorm that worsens into a whiteout too dangerous to navigate alone, pushing Finney to sprint ahead to gauge their location. They’re eventually found by Mando, a stern, capable guardian who insists Gwen be placed in a separate dorm from the boys, much to her chagrin. The group also learns more about Hope, the former counselor nicknamed “Starlight,” who is tied to the camp’s dark past. The danger crescendos as The Grabber directly makes contact with Mando, projecting a blood-and-snow image of his mask on the window. The killer confronts Finney, escaping only after the icy hell has revealed his true face—a hideously decayed mask beneath the surface.
