What Is Big Bang About?
The premise of Big Bang in 269 words, with nothing given away. The full story follows below.
In the frenzied pulse of modern Seoul, ordinary routines clash with sudden bursts of rebellion, turning a city’s familiar streets into a backdrop for unexpected upheaval. The film paints a world where the pressure of conformity hangs heavy, yet the slightest crack in a carefully kept façade can send ripples through everyday life, hinting at how easily order can dissolve into chaos.
Park Man‑su is the embodiment of disciplined monotony—a salaried worker who lives by an inflexible set of self‑imposed rules. When his personal life unravels and his professional standing crumbles, the once‑steady foundation of his world begins to tremble. Faced with a sudden loss of control, he impulsively decides to test the limits of his own restraint, choosing to abandon the decorum that has defined him for years.
A diligent, down‑on‑his‑luck officer, Ma Dong‑cheol, detains him, dragging the disgruntled man into the sterile confines of a police station. There, Yang Chul‑gon—a hardened career criminal accustomed to the inside of a cell—crosses paths with Man‑su. Their meeting sparks a volatile partnership, as the timid newcomer is coaxed into a desperate bid for freedom, pulling the seasoned offender along for a night that quickly spirals beyond a simple escape.
What follows is a restless odyssey through Seoul’s neon‑lit avenues, where two starkly different personalities are forced to navigate a world that suddenly feels hostile and absurd. The tone balances sharp humor with anxious tension, highlighting the uneasy chemistry between a rule‑bound citizen and a lifelong lawbreaker. As they grapple with the consequences of an impulsive act, the city becomes both a labyrinth and a stage for their unlikely, adrenaline‑charged journey.

Park Man-su is an ordinary salaryman who lives his life according to a strict set of rules, and this lack of flexibility makes him hard to like at home and at the office. One day, his wife asks for a divorce because she’s bored with their life, and he is fired because his corrupt boss hates him. So on his way home, the frustrated and outraged Man-su tries to set himself free by breaking all the rules that have restricted him his entire life by deviating from them, just for one day. He swears at passers-by, kicks signboards and pees on the street, and he is soon placed under arrest by Ma Dong-cheol, a demoted but zealous cop. Officer Ma takes him to the police station to teach him a lesson, where Man-su meets Yang Chul-gon, a career criminal with 15 previous convictions, who finds it more comfortable to be behind bars. Yang Chul-gon incites the desperate and timid Man-su to escape the police station with him, and through a series of mishaps, they happen to steal a gun and police car, with which they also try their hand at punishing “law dodgers” themselves. With Officer Ma in hot pursuit, Man-su and Yang Chul-gon find themselves branded as antisocial vigilantes, and the ₩50,000 fine for Man-su’s original misdemeanor has now turned into a potential life sentence. Thus, the unlikely pair spend a wild night together in Seoul.
