Kaalaiyan leads a hard life with his widowed mother, steady in his daily work and unwavering in his love for Sumathi. But the gulf between his poverty and Sumathi’s wealthy father Murukesh creates an insurmountable barrier to their union. When Kaalaiyan’s boldness clashes with Murukesh’s plans to demolish nearby huts, the tension escalates, and Murukesh, together with a partner, hatches a cruel scheme. They manipulate Kaalaiyan into believing that he is about to marry Sumathi, drawing him into a trap. The ploy works, and Kaalaiyan is murdered in cold blood, a tragedy born from deceit and class prejudice.

From death, the story shifts into the supernatural. Kaalaiyan’s spirit journeys to the underworld, where he meets the Lord of Death, Yama. He explains that his death was a grave misfortune—not a true end—and Yama, moved by the innocence of the young man, grants him a second chance. He is reborn in the body of a mild-mannered villager named Balu, whose own life is shadowed by threat from his paternal uncle and aunt, who aim to kill him and control his fate.

As Balu, the survivor begins anew, sharing his life with his widowed mother and his beloved Gauri. He finds himself navigating this fresh existence while carrying the faint echoes of his past life. Yet the past cannot stay buried for long. He resolves to confront the wrongs done to his new family, targeting his uncle Chinnasamy, his aunt, and cousin Periyasaamy to teach them a necessary lesson for their maltreatment of his mother and, by extension, of him.

Time passes with ordinary rhythms until Murukesh—an old associate of Chinnasamy—arrives in Balu’s world. The moment Balu sees Murukesh, memories of his former life come flooding back. He returns to his old haunts, where Murukesh’s goons are startled by the revealed truth and scatter. With this reawakening, Balu—now fully aware of who he was—confides the entire tale to his biological mother and Sumathi, bridging the two lives he has lived.

Meanwhile, Gauri, who has been seeking Balu in Chennai, enters the picture, and a comic tension unfolds as Balu/Kaalaiyan tries to manage two serious affections at once. The dual love triangle adds both humor and complexity to his quest for justice. Guided by the clever counsel of Chitragupta, Balu hatches a plan to outshine Murukesh in wealth and status, turning the tables on his nemesis and humiliating him through shrewd moves.

As more relatives arrive in the city, the layers of confusion unravel. Murukesh responds with a fierce bid to crush the families tied to both Kaalaiyan and Balu, and the threat of violence darkens the path toward resolution. Yet Balu, drawing on the strength of his past life and the support of loved ones, counters Murukesh’s machinations. In a climactic confrontation, Balu/Kaalaiyan foils the killer’s plans and achieves the long-awaited revenge, restoring balance and reasserting his rightful place in the lives of those who matter most.
