Appula Appa Rao 1991

Appa Rao is a chronic welsher whose days are spent running from debt and ducking the demands of endless creditors. His home is a revolving door for moneylenders, and he has become skilled at dodging them with quick excuses and even quicker lies. One night, his path crosses with Subba Lakshmi, a steadfast constable who shows him no patience as she drags him into the orbit of criminals she’s chasing. Their uneasy connection is just the surface of a wilder fortune-telling tale led by the mysterious Sastri, a fortune teller whose ominous predictions take a sharper turn when his enigmatic brother, Irogleg, enters the frame. In Sastri’s prophecy, a woman will slap Appa Rao three times and will become his wife, bringing him wealth. A cynical, wandering alcoholic named Brahmaji casts doubt on the whole omen, adding a new layer of doubt to an already tangled fate.

A twist of fate parts the two when a lottery ticket worth ₹10 lakh becomes the subject of a sly scheme between them after a tear mishap. The seller urges them to hold onto the halves and share any eventual prize, and when the number is announced, Appa Rao hatches a plan to cheat Subba Lakshmi out of her half with a fabricated tale. Yet Subba Lakshmi, seeing a change in their fortunes, hands over her share, fully aware that the ticket never truly won. Appa Rao, touched by what he interprets as generosity, begins to fall for her, while she also finds her feelings shifting toward him. Still, the moment he attempts a kiss, she slaps him—fulfilling the eerie prophecy once more. Appa Rao seeks clarity from Sastri, who, despite his brother’s meddling, confirms that the slap prophecy is indeed fulfilled.

As the couple moves toward marriage, dark interference from Irogleg looms large. Sastri warns that the bride could face a death sentence, forcing Appa Rao to seek a way to break the curse. His search leads him to a peculiar opportunity: marry a dying woman to nullify the curse. Over time, he encounters Ammaji, an elderly woman with four daughters—Bangari, Bujji, Pandu, and Baby. The eldest, Bangari, is diagnosed as a cancer patient, and Appa Rao sees a shortcut to his desires. He marries Bangari, confident that she is near the end. Yet on their wedding night, he calls Irogleg again to confirm his fear, only to discover that Bangari is not dying. Ammaji has misled him about Bangari’s health, and the shock pushes Appa Rao to demand a divorce. Ammaji makes a striking counteroffer: he can divorce Bangari only after he agrees to marry off her other daughters.

At first, Appa Rao tries to arrange marriages for the three girls with beggars to keep them out of trouble, but the daughters refuse to settle for anyone but their true loves. The first daughter is in love with a man who clashes with his elders—his stern father, Eswara Sastry, a traditional musician; his mother Mangatayaru, a fan of a famous film star; and his grandmother Sony, who adores modern pop. The second daughter loves the son of the powerful MLA Nadendla Anjayya, who demands a hefty dowry. The third daughter’s beloved is a man whom she saw in a dream.

Subba Lakshmi grows suspicious when she spots Appa Rao with Bangari, but she is outmaneuvered as he manages to cover his tracks. The two of them join forces to set up the three marriages. They win over Eswara Sastry, Mangatayaru, and Sony by catering to each of their eccentric tastes, while also using a light touch of blackmail to expose Eswara Sastry’s affair with his mistress. They further manipulate the landlord to turn him against Anjayya, devising a plan for Anjayya to fund the dowry through the very dowry demands he had levied, and then catching the third love interest—a bumbling thief—through Subba Lakshmi’s help.

The weddings unfold at a single venue, bringing a flurry of twists and comic chaos. Bangari attempts to sedate Appa Rao with a special medicine, which somehow ends up mixed with the drinks and causes confusion. Ammaji proclaims Brahmaji as her husband who has fled his duties. Anjayya eventually uncovers the fraud, but Appa Rao stays steps ahead. Just as Irogleg arrives to collect his fee, Subba Lakshmi unveils a final truth: she is Ammaji’s eldest daughter, orchestrating the whole scheme to help her family using Appa Rao’s sharp wit. Since Bangari is still naïve, Subba Lakshmi arranged her marriage to Appa Rao as part of the larger plan. In a playful, ironic twist, Sastri hints that Appa Rao should marry Subba Lakshmi as well, and the film closes on a hopeful note as Appa Rao ends up marrying both women, leaving everyone with a complicated but joyous future.
