Winter 1942/1943 unfolds under the shadow of war, as the German Wehrmacht tightens its grip across much of Europe. A Jewish medical student, Rosa Eckart, flees a freight train bound for a concentration camp in Upper Silesia, narrowly escaping capture and losing sight of her husband and son in the chaos of the escape.

She presses deeper into the countryside and hides first in a lonely forest before an encounter with a Polish farmer changes everything. Leon Wolny, a cautious and solitary man, takes her in after a brief, wary meeting. His decision to shelter her comes from a mix of compassion and a sense of duty, but it is tempered by a past that still lingers in his present: a devout Catholic who once dreamed of becoming a priest, now living a life that has left him estranged from the world around him. To his neighbors, he appears peculiar, almost haunted by the loneliness that has shaped him.

In the quiet of the hiding place, Rosa becomes Leon’s lifeline and, in turn, his only confidant. The bond that forms is fraught with power and desperation.
