Palakkad Madhavan, K. Bhagyaraj is a naïve and aspiring music director. His assistant Gopi is a dholak player, and together they head toward the city of Madras in search of a breakthrough. They rent a thatched room on the terrace of Vasanthi’s house, a modest perch that becomes their creative hub and the setting for a growing, if tentative, dream. Madhavan’s talent catches the eye of Vasanthi, and what begins as professional admiration gradually blossoms into love. Yet Madhavan remains cautious, unsure of his own footing in life and wary of letting romance derail his fragile hopes. When he senses that Vasanthi’s feelings are genuine, his hesitation softens and he opens his heart to her.

Vasanthi’s family is gripping with debt, and the pressure mounts as they seek a way out. In a bid to secure their future, they arrange her marriage to Anand, a wealthy widower. Witnessing her plight, Madhavan agrees to a secret, temple wedding with Vasanthi, hoping to protect her from a life of hardship. But their plans are thwarted when relatives arrive on the scene, clash with Madhavan, and forcibly pull Vasanthi away to become Anand’s wife. On the wedding night, Vasanthi consumes poison but is saved in time, leaving everyone to reckon with the consequences of broken promises and social constraints.

Learning about Vasanthi’s past, Anand makes a complicated proposal: if he can secure a semblance of happiness for seven days, he asks her to pretend to be his wife so his terminally ill mother can die peacefully. Vasanthi agrees, and in the process she begins to connect with Anand’s family, especially his daughter, allowing a bond to form beyond the initial arrangement. Anand eventually tracks down Madhavan and presents himself as a film producer offering a chance to compose music for a new project. Madhavan, drawn deeper into the music and the narrative, begins to work on the score while Anand narrates the couple’s love story and Vasanthi’s wedding to Madhavan as if it were the plot of a film, albeit with a different backdrop. The tale unfolds in real time, and Madhavan remains focused on the music, unaware that the story parallels his own life.

As the seventh day approaches, Anand invites Madhavan to his home to discuss the path forward. He continues the story to the moment when the sick mother-in-law dies, and the heroine chooses to leave her husband to live with her lover, prompting Anand to seek Madhavan’s view on this unusual ending. Madhavan’s opinion is a mix of discomfort and reluctant admiration for the producer’s vision, a response he offers to please the man who has brought his music to life.

In a final, delicate turn, Anand leads Madhavan to a private room under the pretense of an advance. The real offer stands: Vasanthi would become Madhavan’s wife, continuing the dream they once shared. Madhavan faces a moral crossroads and agrees—but only if Vasanthi can return to him as a lover, without the thaali. Vasanthi cannot bring herself to remove the sacred symbol, so Anand attempts to persuade her to do so. She resists, and Madhavan makes a bold declaration: his lover could be Anand’s wife, but Anand’s wife can never be Madhavan’s lover again.
