A Summer Story 2024

In the summer of 1902, Frank Ashton, an educated and ambitious young barrister from London, embarks on a walking holiday through the scenic landscapes of Devon with a close friend. During their trip, Frank encounters an unfortunate fall that twists his ankle, forcing him to seek help from a nearby farmhouse in Dartmoor. He stays there for several days to recover, while his friend continues on alone. During his recovery, Frank quickly develops a deep affection for the girl who looks after him, Megan David, played by Rachel Keller. Megan is a kind-hearted, charming village girl who, despite her modest life, captures Frank’s heart almost instantly.

Meanwhile, there is tension within the small community. Megan’s cousin, Joe Narracombe, portrayed by an actor from your cast list, is wary of outsiders like Frank, whom he perceives as too refined and different from their simple rural existence. Joe harbors feelings for Megan himself and views Frank as a threat to his chances with her. After a disagreement with Joe over Megan’s affections, Frank leaves the farm, determined to meet her again. He promises to come back, take her away, and marry her. He travels to Torquay, a seaside resort, to cash a cheque at the bank, hoping to return swiftly and fulfill his promise. Frank’s plan is to start a new life with Megan, but fate has other plans.

In Torquay, Frank finds the bank branch but faces a setback: they refuse to cash his check without confirmation from his London bank, which delays his departure. While waiting, he coincidentally encounters Halliday, an old school friend staying at a local hotel with his three sisters, including the charismatic and kind Stella. As they spend time together, Stella shows a particular interest in Frank, and he begins to reflect on whether he is making the right decision. Thanks to the bank’s delays, he misses his train, which was supposed to take him back to Megan.

Halliday, noticing Frank’s anxiousness, asks him about his worries. Frank confesses his love for Megan and his desire to marry her, but Halliday counsels caution. He warns Frank that love, especially in the idealized form he perceives, can sometimes lead to rash decisions that ignore the realities of life. Frank follows Megan discreetly down a street, almost catching up to her. Just as she is about to turn around and recognize him, he hides behind a building to avoid being seen. Megan, unaware of his presence, leaves, and Frank is left with a mixture of regret and longing.

Eighteen years later, Frank Ashton is now married to Stella, played by [Rachel Keller], and they are traveling through Devon in a motor car. They are a childless couple but share a comfortable life together. During a visit to the farm where he once fell in love with Megan, Frank is greeted by Jim, a farmhand who reveals that Megan returned to Dartmoor heartbroken after losing him. Megan, it turns out, died shortly after giving birth to a son named Frank — a testament to her enduring love and hope that he would return someday.

Frank is taken to Megan’s grave, which is located at the very spot where they first met — a place she longed to be buried to wait for him. As he reflects on their tragic story, Frank’s feelings of sorrow and nostalgia grow stronger. Leaving the grave behind, he and Stella drive away. Along their journey, Frank notices a young man herding sheep, who is greeted with a warm smile as they pass. In that moment, he realizes with a poignant sense of recognition that the boy is Frank, Megan’s son, and the future of his lost love.
