A Report on the Party and the Guests 2020

A sunlit field becomes the setting for a casual picnic that brings together four men and three women. They tidy up their blankets and prepare to head back, one woman noting they should hurry so they can reach a celebration on time. As they move toward the trees, a man steps out with a smile, linking arms with Karel, one of the picnickers. More men reveal themselves, and with a firm hand they guide the group toward a clearing in the wood.

In that clearing, a table and chairs are suddenly brought out and arranged as if for a formal gathering. The leader sits down and greets the group, asking if they are enjoying their trip to the countryside. Karel pushes back, demanding to know what is going on, but the second-in-command simply orders everyone to spread out. A picnick­er wearing glasses begins to sort the women from the men and lines them up alphabetically before stepping forward again. The circle is then drawn around the remaining six picnickers, and the leader declares that crossing the line is forbidden. Karel insists that the leader leave them alone, yet the others urge him to stop acting defiantly. The man with the glasses tries to read the mood and uncover the reason behind this strange arrangement, and after a tense exchange, the leader concedes that this has all been a joke.

When a woman says she needs the bathroom, she’s allowed out of the circle and into the woods. Taking advantage of the distraction, Karel crosses the line without permission. The leader gives chase, and his followers descend on Karel, roughing him up and tossing him into the air. Then a woman returns from the trees with a man who speaks for the group, asking the leader, a figure named Rudolf, to apologize to the picnickers. The host explains that he adopted Rudolf the day before and offers his own apology. The group then shifts blame onto Karel as much as they blame Rudolf for the earlier moment in the clearing. More guests emerge from the trees and greet the picnickers before everyone starts to move down a steep slope, winding through the woods toward a lake where the shore is lined with many tables, white tablecloths, and elaborate place settings.

Dinner begins to unfold with an emotional moment. One of the picnickers begins to cry, revealing that her husband—who had not spoken in the clearing—has left. The meal gets underway, but a disruption arises when she realizes she has been seated at the wrong place, prompting a scramble to swap to the assigned chairs. The host, irritated by the commotion, asks Rudolf why there isn’t an empty chair for the missing guest. Rudolf searches for the missing chair and then for the man who disappeared. The host suggests that the guests should stay for now, while a different guest—one wearing glasses—urges everyone to go and retrieve their missing companion.

A plan is formed to use a dog to track the missing picnick­er, a notion that excites the host. The glasses-wearing guest convinces the host that they should remain at the table in case the man returns, but also urges the group to go out and find him. Meanwhile, the wife of the missing man explains why she did not leave with her husband: she simply did not want to abandon the celebration. As the candles on the tables fade, the dog’s bark cuts through the growing tension, casting a dark echo over the continuing search.

Throughout the evening, the dynamics among the picnickers, the improvised authority of Rudolf, and the host’s uneasy leadership reveal a ritual that feels more like a test than a mere social gathering. The sense of unease lingers as the party negotiates rules, loyalties, and the unsettling possibility that forgetting certain things might be easier than facing the truth about what happened in the clearing. The lakefront dinner scene becomes a slow, deliberate meditation on control, conformity, and the fragile lines between hospitality and coercion, all under the pale glow of the night sky and the persistent, watchful presence of the dog in the background.
