El Cid, The Legend 2020

Ben Yusuf invades the Muslim Taifa of Zaragoza, launching a sweeping campaign to conquer the Iberian Peninsula and redraw the balance of power in the region. In response, prince Al-Mu’tamin flees to Castile to warn King Ferdinand of the looming threat, setting the stage for a clash of destinies that will test loyalties, courage, and the very idea of honor.

In Castile, Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar grows up in a life of privilege as the son of the local commander, Don Diego Laínez de Vivar. He shares a close bond with the future king of Castile, Prince Sancho, and harbors a secret, tender connection with Jimena, the daughter of Count Gormaz, who eventually takes over his father’s command. Yet Jimena’s father disapproves of their romance and pressures Jimena to marry the arrogant Count Ordoñez, a rivalry that will shape every choice Rodrigo makes.

When Almoravid forces cross the Castilian border, Rodrigo joins Sancho, Ordoñez, and Gormaz on a scouting mission near Zaragoza. The group sets up a camp where Gormaz is suddenly ambushed by Al-Mu’tamin and his warriors, only to be saved by Rodrigo’s intervention. Al-Mu’tamin speaks with Sancho and is allowed to accompany them back to Castile, sowing the seeds of uneasy alliances and contested loyalties that will echo through the years.

After a period of dynastic maneuvering, King Ferdinand dies, and the wily and power-hungry princess Urraca moves to eliminate Sancho so Alfonso can ascend the throne. On a balcony, Gormaz meets Rodrigo at Jimena’s request, and Rodrigo asks for Jimena’s hand in marriage. Gormaz, fearing replacement, refuses and instead challenges Rodrigo to a duel. As the two clash, Urraca’s lover and servant stab Sancho in the back, while Rodrigo’s strike accidentally takes Gormaz’s life. Jimena, grief-stricken, drives Rodrigo from her sight, and the court learns of the bloodshed with heavy hearts.

Alfonso is crowned, but Rodrigo refuses to kneel before him and compels Alfonso to swear that he had nothing to do with Sancho’s death. The oath is forced, yet Alfonso’s anger remains, and he banishes Rodrigo without honor. Rodrigo flees to Zaragoza, where he reunites with old friends Álvar Fáñez and Garcés, and with Al-Mu’tamin. Following Al-Mu’tamin’s plan, the four men decide to reclaim the castle of Emir Al-Muqtadir and free the enslaved people of Zaragoza. With Garcés’ adopted badger, Ruidoso, they infiltrate the fortress, freeing Al-Muqtadir and others, and Rodrigo is proclaimed commander of Al-Muqtadir’s forces, reclaiming lands in the name of the king and earning a reputation among both Muslims and Christians as El Cid.

Soon a letter from Alfonso calls Rodrigo back to Castile, and he returns alone to face the king. Alfonso offers a pardon if Rodrigo would join the campaign against Yusuf, but Rodrigo suspects Yusuf’s true aim is Valencia. He refuses, prompting imprisonment. Urraca visits Rodrigo in his cell, attempts to seduce him, and then releases him on the condition that he kills Alfonso. Instead, Rodrigo reveals the dagger and reveals Urraca’s role in Sancho’s death, forcing Alfonso to release him. He stops by Jimena’s room, only to be turned away by a woman who believes he murdered her father, deepening Rodrigo’s sense of exile.

Rodrigo flees Castile as Alfonso confronts Don Diego, who swears he never freed Rodrigo without cause. With Urraca’s schemes exposed, Alfonso becomes wary but ultimately moves to restore unity, and Jimena follows Rodrigo toward Valencia. Ordoñez pursues them, and both are captured by Amir Al-Qadir, an ally of Yusuf. Rodrigo and his companions infiltrate Yusuf’s fortress in Zaragoza once more, hoping to swing the gates open for a siege. The plan falters, and Rodrigo is forced to surrender when Yusuf threatens Jimena. A swift escape follows as Garcés opens the gates, and Rodrigo’s forces, led by Al-Mu’tamin, lay siege to the stronghold only to be overwhelmed by Yusuf’s larger army.

In the heat of battle, Rodrigo confronts Yusuf in single combat. Yusuf has the upper hand and disarms him, but Ordoñez and Jimena escape in the chaos. Alfonso and his forces arrive, turning the tide and overwhelming Yusuf’s army. In a final clash, Yusuf moves to kill Rodrigo, but Jimena retrieves Yusuf’s sword, enabling Rodrigo to disarm and defeat him. With Yusuf defeated, Alfonso pardons Rodrigo and grants him his blessing to marry Jimena, while Ordoñez accepts the turn of events and joins them on their journey to Valencia. There, Rodrigo is granted dominion over Valencia, and a lasting peace begins to take shape, grounded in the hard-won reconciliation of rival loyalties and a future built on honor earned through hardship.
