Born in New York City to Canadian actress Charlotte Holland and American actor‑director Sam Wanamaker, she moved to the United Kingdom with her family in 1952 after her father was black‑listed in Hollywood; the family never returned to the United States. Educated at the progressive King Alfred School in Hampstead, the Quaker Sidcot School, and later the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama, Wanamaker honed a craft that would see her become a leading figure in both the Royal Shakespeare Company and the National Theatre.
