Yoshiko Sakuma (佐久間 良子) is a celebrated Japanese actress whose career spans more than six decades, making her one of the most enduring figures in post‑war Japanese cinema and television. Born on 24 February 1939 in Tokyo, Japan, she was discovered in 1957 while still a teenager and promptly signed a contract with the prolific Toei film studio, a move that launched her into a bustling film industry eager for fresh talent. Her screen debut came the following year with the drama "Utsukushiki Shimai no Monogatari Modaeru Soshun," and she quickly became known for her versatile performances, ranging from the spirited heroine in "Kiiroi Fudo" (1961) to the regal Princess Yu in the historic epic "Samurai Banners" (1969). Throughout the 1960s and 1970s Sakuma appeared in a mix of action‑filled gangster movies such as "Gang vs. G‑Men" (1962) and more nuanced dramas like "Lake of Teras" (1966), demonstrating an ability to navigate both commercial and artistic projects with equal aplomb. In addition to her film work, Sakuma achieved notable success on television, most prominently when she portrayed the legendary figure Nene in the NHK Taiga drama Onna Taikōki (1981), a role that cemented her status as a beloved household name.
