Yasuo Yamada (山田 康雄, 1932‑09‑10 – 1995‑03‑19) was a Japanese actor, voice actor, and narrator whose career spanned more than four decades, from 1953 to his untimely death in 1995. Born in Tokyo City to a family of government officials, his father died when he was only three, leaving his mother to raise him. Although he entered the prestigious Tokyo Metropolitan Hibiya High School and later attempted admission to the University of Tokyo, his passion for comedy and performance led him to drop out of Waseda University and join the demanding Mingei Theatre Company as a research student. After a brief stint there, he became a freelancer, eventually joining the comedy‑focused troupe Theater Echo in 1958, where he first tried voice work despite an early setback that taught him humility and a rigorous work ethic. In 1959 he achieved a breakthrough by dubbing Clint Eastwood’s Rawhide character Roddy, a role that established him as the official Japanese voice of Eastwood and later Jean‑Paul Belmondo. His most iconic performance began in 1971 when he was cast as Arsène Lupin III; he voiced the gentleman‑thief for 23 years, infusing the character with his own improvisational style, unique catch‑phrases, and a charismatic cadence that became inseparable from the role. Yamada’s dedication extended beyond the microphone: he hosted television programs, narrated documentaries, and occasionally returned to the stage, famously appearing in “The Sunshine Boys” in 1984. Known for his cheerful, witty personality yet capable of serious introspection, he embodied the Japanese concept of iki and famously said, “Things don’t work out that well in this world anyway, so let’s just laugh it off.” His personal life was guarded; he married in 1965 and had a son and a daughter, both of whom remained out of the public eye. Yamada’s sudden death from a brain hemorrhage in 1995 ended an era, and he is still remembered as the eternal voice of Lupin III and a beloved figure in Japanese dubbing history.
