Wendy Richard, born Wendy Emerton on 20 July 1943 in Middlesbrough, North Riding of Yorkshire, became one of British television's most enduring and beloved performers, despite a childhood marked by profound tragedy when her father died by suicide when she was just eleven years old. After attending the prestigious Italia Conti Academy of Theatre Arts, where she funded her studies by working in the fashion department at the renowned Fortnum and Mason department store, she launched her screen career in the early 1960s, quickly establishing herself with regular roles in popular series such as The Newcomers and Dad's Army. However, it was her portrayal of the cheeky, Cockney shop assistant Miss Shirley Brahms in the long-running BBC sitcom Are You Being Served? from 1972 to 1985 that cemented her status as a household name throughout the United Kingdom, with her character's flirtatious banter and distinctive accent making her a standout among the eccentric staff of the fictional Grace Brothers department store. During this period, she also appeared in two Carry On films and various other television comedies, showcasing her versatility as a performer. She later reprised this iconic role in the sequel series Grace and Favour in the early 1990s, bringing her beloved character back to screens for a new generation of viewers.

In 1985, Richard embarked on what would become her most defining and long-running role, originating the character of Pauline Fowler in the BBC soap opera EastEnders, appearing in over two thousand episodes and becoming one of only two original cast members to remain continuously until her dramatic departure in 2006. For her outstanding services to television drama, she was appointed Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in 2000 and received the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award at the British Soap Awards in 2007, cementing her legacy as a soap opera icon. Richard's personal life included four marriages—to music publisher Leonard Blach, advertising director Will Thorpe, carpet fitter Paul Glorney, and finally painter and decorator John Burns in 2008—but she had no children. Tragically, after battling breast cancer initially diagnosed in 1996 and experiencing devastating recurrences in 2002 and 2008 that eventually metastasized throughout her body, she passed away on 26 February 2009 at the age of 65. Her final months were documented in a touching television documentary, and she left behind an indelible legacy as one of British television's most formidable and beloved matriarchs.
