Walerian Borowczyk (21 October 1923 – 3 February 2006) was a Polish‑born filmmaker whose career spanned more than four decades, blending surreal animation, avant‑garde storytelling, and explicit eroticism. Born in Kwilcz near Poznań, he first trained as a painter at the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków, where he also excelled in lithography and poster design, winning a national prize in 1953. His earliest experiments were brief, word‑free animations that played with visual puns and abstract shapes; notable early works such as Był sobie raz (1957) and Dom (1958, co‑directed with Jan Lenica) earned him critical acclaim and set the stage for his distinctive blend of fantasy and meticulous craftsmanship. In 1959 Borowczyk emigrated to Paris, joining the vibrant post‑war French film community and collaborating with Chris Marker on the documentary short Les Astronautes. The 1960s saw him push the limits of stop‑motion with Renaissance (1964), a reverse‑motion meditation on destruction and rebirth, and to launch his first animated feature, Théâtre de Monsieur & Madame Kabal (1967), a deliberately adult‑oriented picture that foretold his later reputation as a provocateur. **

**The director’s transition to live‑action began with Goto, l'île d’amour (1968) and Blanche (1971), both starring his wife Ligia Branice and exploring forbidden desire within mythic or historical settings. His 1975 adaptation of Stefan Żeromski’s novel, Dzieje grzechu (A Story of Sin), was nominated for the Palme d’Or and demonstrated his capacity for literary depth, while Immoral Tales (1973) and La Bête (1975) provoked scandal for their explicit content yet were praised by French critics for their surreal visual language. Throughout the 1980s Borowczyk continued to oscillate between erotic drama (Docteur Jekyll et les femmes, 1981) and literary homage (Ars Amandi, 1983), culminating in his final feature Cérémonie d'amour (1988). In addition to filmmaking he authored three books, including Anatomia diabła (1992).
