W. Kamau Bell is an American stand‑up comedian, television host, writer, and social activist born on January 26, 1973 in Palo Alto, California. He is the only child of Walter Bell, former Alabama Insurance Commissioner and chairman of Swiss Re America Holding Corporation, and Janet Cheatham Bell, a self‑publishing entrepreneur. Bell spent his formative years moving between Boston’s Mattapan neighborhood, the Deep South, and Chicago, eventually graduating from the University of Chicago Laboratory Schools before enrolling at the University of Pennsylvania, which he left to pursue comedy and filmmaking at Columbia College Chicago. His early work in San Francisco included founding the comedy collective Laughter Against the Machine and appearing on podcasts such as WTF with Marc Maron, establishing him as a sociopolitical humorist. In 2005 he began a national performing career, releasing the comedy album One Night Only in 2007 and following with Face Full of Flour in 2010, an album later cited among iTunes’ top ten comedy releases. He hosted the FXX series Totally Biased with W. Kamau Bell (2012‑2013), a Chris Rock‑produced show blending observational comedy with pointed social commentary, and later became the acclaimed host and executive producer of CNN’s documentary series United Shades of America (2016‑2022), earning multiple Emmy nominations and three Creative Arts Emmy wins. Bell also co‑hosts popular podcasts such as Denzel Washington Is the Greatest Actor of All Time Period and Politically Re‑Active, and authored the autobiographical collection The Awkward Thoughts of W.
