Virginia Huston (born Virginia Houston) was an American actress whose career spanned the golden age of film noir and adventure pictures. Born on April 24, 1925, in Wisner, Nebraska, she was the daughter of Marcus and Mary Agnes Houston and grew up with two brothers, a background that grounded her in Midwestern values before she entered Hollywood. From a young age she displayed a flair for performance, appearing on the radio program Calling All Cars at just twelve and participating in stage productions at the Omaha Community Playhouse while attending Duchesne Catholic School for Girls in Omaha. When she began her film career she altered the spelling of her surname to “Huston” to echo the famous Huston family of directors and actors, a decision that helped her stand out in a crowded industry. Her first screen credit came with Desirable Woman, and after signing with RKO in 1945 she quickly rose to prominence, starring opposite George Raft in Nocturne (1946), a role in which her nightclub singing was dubbed by a professional vocalist. Huston is perhaps best remembered for her work in classic noir, notably as Robert Mitchum’s love interest in Out of the Past (1947) and again alongside him in The Racket (1951). She also portrayed Jane in the jungle adventure Tarzan's Peril (1951), becoming one of several actresses to assume the iconic role. A serious automobile accident that left her with a broken back interrupted her ascent, and after a brief return to smaller‑budget productions she retired from the screen in 1952 upon marrying real‑estate agent Manus Paul Clinton II. Virginia Huston died of cancer on February 28, 1981, in Santa Monica, California, leaving behind a concise yet memorable film legacy.
