Violent J, born Joseph Frank Bruce on 1972-04-28 in Berkley, Michigan, is an American rapper, record producer, professional wrestler, and actor best known as one half of the horror‑core duo Insane Clown Posse (ICP). Raised as the youngest of three after his father abandoned the family, Bruce endured poverty, relying on rummage‑sale clothing and school food drives, experiences that deeply shaped his dark lyrical aesthetic. At age seven he and his brother made a solemn vow to the dead butterfly they unintentionally killed, a promise that later inspired the recurring “Dedicated to the Butterfly” dedication on every ICP release. After a brief stint in a gang called Inner City Posse, the brothers rebranded as Insane Clown Posse in 1991, channeling a vivid dream of a carnival clown into the elaborate Dark Carnival mythology that has become a cultural touchstone for their dedicated Juggalos. Bruce co‑founded Psychopathic Records in 1991, steering ICP to achieve two platinum and five gold albums and selling over 6.5 million units in North America by 2007. Beyond group work, he released solo projects such as Enter the Ghetto Zone (1989), Wizard of the Hood (2003), and The Shining (2009), and in 2023 collaborated with alternative rock supergroup The Lucid on the Saddle Up and Ride EP. His wrestling career mirrors his music, spanning ECW, WWF, WCW, and the creation of Juggalo Championship Wrestling, where he performed under monikers like “Darryl Daniels” and “Hector Hatchet”. He even appeared as a playable character in the Backyard Wrestling video games. As an actor, Bruce starred in Psychopathic Records’ cult films Big Money Hustlas (2000) and its sequel, and has continued to act in projects like Bunker Heights.
