Valerio Ruggeri (12 February 1934 – 4 July 2015) was a prolific Italian actor and voice actor whose career spanned nearly six decades, leaving an indelible mark on both stage and screen. Born in the suburb of Cinisello Balsamo, situated in the greater Milan area, Ruggeri entered the theatrical world in the early 1960s, collaborating with avant‑garde legends Dario Fo and Franca Rame. His early stage work showcased a keen sense of timing and character, qualities that would later define his voice‑over performances. By the late 1950s he had already begun dubbing foreign productions, a skill that quickly made him a sought‑after talent in the Italian dubbing industry. Ruggeri became especially renowned for lending his warm, expressive voice to animated icons, most notably as the Italian voice of Rabbit in the beloved Winnie‑the‑Pooh franchise, a role he inhabited across numerous films and television series. He also succeeded Mario Milita as the second voice of Herbert in Family Guy, demonstrating his versatility in comic timing. In live‑action dubbing, audiences heard his rendition of Grandpa Joe in the 2005 Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Nels Oleson in the classic Little House on the Prairie. Although primarily a voice actor, Ruggeri made cameo appearances in celebrated Italian cinema, appearing in The Leopard (1963) and A Quiet Place in the Country (1968). His contributions extended to video games and radio, further cementing his status as a multidimensional performer. Valerio Ruggeri passed away from a heart attack on 4 July 2015 in Rome at the age of 81; his iconic roles of Rabbit and Herbert were subsequently taken over by Mino Caprio and Angelo Nicotra, respectively, ensuring his legacy endures in the hearts of Italian audiences.
