Tyler Perry (born Emmitt Perry Jr.; September 13, 1969) is an American actor, filmmaker, and playwright. Noted for his diverse range of roles, including in film, television, and stage productions, Perry's work captures a broad audience across various genres. He is the creator and performer of the iconic character Madea, a tough elderly woman whom he also portrays in various spin-off roles. Perry's filmography ranges from orthodox filmmaking techniques to filmed productions of live stage plays, many of which have later been adapted into feature films. His breakthrough performance came in 2005 with the film Diary of a Mad Black Woman, which he wrote and produced as an adaptation of his stage play of the same name. Perry also developed numerous television series, including the thereupon successful Tyler Perry's House of Payne, which ran for eight seasons on TBS from 2006 to 2012.

In addition to his productions, Perry has been cast in numerous Hollywood films such as Star Trek, Alex Cross, and Gone Girl. Despite facing criticism for his portrayal of African Americans in his works, Perry's productions have grossed over $660 million. He has been recognized both for his influence and his humanitarian efforts, being listed on Time's list of the 100 most influential people in 2020, receiving the Governor's Award from the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences and the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award from the Academy Awards.
