Timo Torikka (born 1 February 1958 in Kerava, Finland) is a versatile Finnish actor who has also distinguished himself as a writer and director in television and theater. After completing his studies at the Theatre Academy of Finland in 1982, he quickly entered the professional world, appearing on stage and in film, and his career has spanned more than four decades. One of his most celebrated screen performances came in 1989 when he portrayed Pentti Saari in Talvisota (The Winter War), a role that remains a touchstone of Finnish war cinema. Torikka broadened his international exposure by appearing in two episodes of the French television series Maigret alongside Bruno Cremer, playing the detective Inspector Ari Vaara. In 1993 he undertook the ambitious task of adapting J. R. R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings for Finnish television, serving as both writer and director of the nine‑episode series Hobitit. His stage credentials include work with the Cologne Theatre in Germany on Karin Beier’s production of Sturm (Shakespeare’s Tempest) in 1997, and a notable French tour from 2005 to 2007 in Zinnie Harris’s play Plus loin que loin, where he performed the role of Bill. The actor continued to take on prominent film roles, such as a leading part in Mika Kaurismäki’s Kolme viisasta miestä (Three Wise Men) in 2008, followed by appearances in Rööperi (2009) and Haarautuvan rakkauden talo the same year. More recent work includes the acclaimed dramas Veljekset (Brothers, 2011) and Elokuu (August, 2011), demonstrating his sustained relevance in contemporary Finnish cinema. Throughout his career Torikka has combined a strong theatrical foundation with a willingness to explore diverse media, making him a respected figure in both national and international performing arts circles.
