Timothy MacKenzie Gunn (born July 29, 1953 in Washington, D.C., United States) is an American author, academic, fashion consultant, actor, and television personality whose career spans more than four decades. After earning a BFA in sculpture from the Corcoran College of Art and Design, he began teaching at Parsons School of Design in 1982, eventually becoming chair of the fashion design department in 2000 and reshaping the curriculum for the 21st‑century designer. His academic tenure lasted until 2007, when he transitioned to the corporate world as chief creative officer for Liz Claiborne (now Kate Spade & Company). Gunn first entered mainstream fame in 2004 as the no‑nonsense mentor on Project Runway, where his signature catchphrase, “Make it work,” became a cultural touchstone. Over sixteen seasons he guided emerging designers, earned a Primetime Emmy Award in 2013, and spun off two successful shows: Tim Gunn's Guide to Style and Under the Gunn. In addition to television, he voiced the castle steward Baileywick on Disney Junior’s Sofia the First and narrated the sitcom Mixology, while also appearing as himself on series such as Ugly Betty, How I Met Your Mother, and Gossip Girl. An accomplished writer, he has authored five books on style, etiquette, and personal development, including A Guide to Quality, Taste & Style and The Natty Professor. Beyond his professional achievements, Gunn is an outspoken advocate for animal rights, a vocal supporter of LGBTQ+ equality, and has openly discussed his asexual identity and celibacy, positioning him as a nuanced public figure who blends creativity, mentorship, and advocacy.
