Jan Heinrich Tilman Kiwe, who was born Eduard Heinrich Kiefer on June 7, 1910, in the historic city of Aachen, Germany, established himself as a remarkably versatile figure whose professional life encompassed the disparate worlds of military service, academic ethnology, and theatrical performance. Before the outbreak of World War II disrupted his trajectory, Kiwe immersed himself in rigorous intellectual and artistic preparation, studying ethnology at institutions in both Cologne and Baltimore, USA, while simultaneously honing his craft as an actor and singer at the Conservatory in Aachen under the tutelage of the Swiss performer Adolf Manz. His academic pursuits were complemented by practical fieldwork, most notably an ambitious expedition to the remote Tibesti Mountains in French Chad during 1938, which underscored his dedication to anthropological research. When war erupted, Kiwe served with considerable distinction as a Hauptmann (captain) in the elite Fallschirmjäger paratrooper units of the Luftwaffe, seeing action with the 1st Parachute Division during the invasion of the Soviet Union and later with the Afrika Korps in North Africa. His military career culminated in the awarding of the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross on May 12, 1943, merely days before the Axis surrender in Tunisia led to his capture. His subsequent internment at Camp Trinidad in Colorado became the stuff of legend due to his audacious escape attempts, including one remarkable incident where he utilized vegetable dye to alter his uniform and traveled by train as far as St. Louis before detection, and another where he reached the Mexican border only to be apprehended once more.

Following his eventual repatriation to Germany after the war's conclusion, Kiefer permanently adopted the stage name Til Kiwe and inaugurated his acting career in 1946 with a debut at Munich's experimental Die Spieler theatre, subsequently securing positions at the city's most prestigious cultural institutions including the Junges Theater, the Munich Kammerspiele, and the Bayerisches Staatsschauspiel, where he remained a resident performer until 1972. Throughout this period, he demonstrated exceptional range across the classical and modern repertoire, essaying roles such as Ruprecht in Heinrich von Kleist's The Broken Jug, Leander in Grillparzer's Des Meeres und der Liebe Wellen, Eilif in Brecht's Mother Courage and Her Children, and Professor Higgins in Shaw's Pygmalion, while simultaneously appearing in numerous Heimatfilme and war dramas that often utilized his authentic military bearing. His cinematic credits include iconic portrayals of German officers, most notably as the guard Frick in the 1963 blockbuster The Great Escape, as Werner von Haeften in Jackboot Mutiny, and as various Wehrmacht and SS officers in Bernhard Wicki's Die Brücke and Darkness Fell on Gotenhafen. Beyond his theatrical and film work, Kiwe maintained his ethnological passions through extensive travels to the Atacama Desert, Easter Island, and the Mato Grosso Plateau, channeling these experiences into seventeen documentary films produced for UNESCO during the 1950s and 1960s. From 1972 onward, he expanded his artistic influence into theatre direction, mounting productions of The Broken Jug, Pygmalion, and Volpone, while also contributing to German television as both an actor and writer, and establishing himself as a prominent voice actor who dubbed major Hollywood stars including Errol Flynn, David Niven, and Douglas Fairbanks Jr., ensuring his lasting legacy in German entertainment until his death in Munich in 1995.
